Meteor crater descent in a Mule

Post by Steven Malikoff » Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:24 pm

Here's a picture of a Mule descending the Wolf Creek Meteor Crater in the middle of Australia. Done in 1973, this was the first (and possibly only) vehicle to have done so. The 300,000 year old crater is half a mile wide and 164 feet deep. The driver was one of two brothers who were well-known TV travel presenters around that time.

Leave it to the Aussies, a right-hand drive Mule! :D Unusual looking foot basket, and it DOES appear that the foot controls are on the right side. Any more photos? Neat!

G'day Ben,
As far as I know, there are two in Oz, neither of which are for sale. One is (I think) in a museum in Victoria (Bandiana?) and the other is this exact Mule in the photo above - the Leyland brothers vehicle. When they modified it they threw away the foot basket and other bits :x . It's now owned by an MJCQ member here in Brisbane; it almost made an appearance at the gymkhana last weekend but he brought his jeep instead. I'd dearly love to hear about more Mules down under, good luck in your quest!
