best source for m38a1 canvas?

Post by captain caos » Thu Sep 09, 2010 3:15 am

My buddy just bought his first jeep (a 1952 m38a1) and it is complete but he is looking for the top, side curtains and doors for it, do the sell these at gilbert and if so what is the going price range on these? I also mentioned just going with a repro and wondered what your feelings were on those as well, which do you prefer? thanks russ

NOS is just about extinct, repro is all that is out there. Door frames are in short supply, those seeking complete enclosures usually have to come up with their own door frames. There are several variations of M-38A1 doors and their handles. As for who to buy from, my rule of thumb is the smaller the advertiser, the better the product.
Do not opt for the "Summer Top" option, the Army never had such a top, all tops were fitted with the flaps and hardware to accept the enclosure kit which included doors and side curtains. Many owners opt for the "Summer Top" and sadly realize that these tops are not equipped to accept the side curtains or doors.

Captain,

I buy all my canvas from Dave at WeeBee Webbing. Here is a link to his website - http://www.odcloth.com/

Here is the specific link to the M38/M38A1 Product page - http://www.odcloth.com/m38.html

For a top, you will need to pre-order and Dave can bring it to Gilbert. Give him a call.

In my travels around the Western States, I pick up any quality piece of military canvas I can find.
I'd added to my own collection, a GP Medium, GP medium Liner, U.S. Latrine, various Halfshelters, a canvas cover for a bakery trailer (for sale), a 90MM gun cover, .30 caliber machinegun covers that fit on the front of tanks for thier flexable hull MG, some odd shaped tarps, and even several original covers for the m37... But never anything for the M38A1.
Many owners opt for the "Summer Top" and sadly realize that these tops are not equipped to accept the side curtains or doors.
Really? Cause I'd buy a slightly used one in a heartbeat. I'll never use doors or side curtains!

It is risky to buy used M-38/M-38A1 Canvas top and expect it to be serviceable, the Jeeps have been out of the system 40 years and the used canvas if not stored idealy may be weak with dry rot.
