AN INTERESTING THEORY ON JERRICANS

Post by lucakiki » Sat Oct 25, 2003 7:42 am

It is commonly accepted that U.S. Jerricans were inspired by smuggled German cans.As a matter of fact although assembled in a different way,in three pieces rather than two halves, they had one common feature : the X pressed indentation, tipical of 1939 german cans.In 1940,Italian Jerrycans, had ,on one of the sides only, the so called square pattern:this was to allow a place were to include the R.E. stamped-in lettering (Regio Esercito=Royal Army). The square pattern was found to be a better reinforcement,so the germans adopted it,and also italian cans AFTER 1942 switched to having it on BOTH halves. The british, the last on the jerrycan stage, copied the square pattern, regardless of an undeniable swastika look .The spout was,as we know, absolutely identical. Its adoption by the USMC,kind of closes the circle.

Hi Luca, maybe you can help me with a Jerry can I have, It looks like a normal 2 peice german type can but it has no markings or stampings on it and both the sides have just a X stamped in to them and the cam lock type spout.
I can send you some Pics of it if it will help.

Skip, if your can has the simple X-shaped pressings it may very well be an early German-made can. They started making them in early 1937, and in early 1938 they started stamping them. So you might have a 1937 made German can. However, if your can has the X with the square in the middle.....well, we'll have to discuss it further. Anyway, you can find some info on German cans in one of my previous posts: http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5622

Uh, the "41" marked "dwc" can I have does have the WEHRMACHT stamping at the bottom, and the "Feur...." and the "20l" stampings on it.

Anyone know what "dwc" stands for and where the company was located?

Might be "Deutsch Waffen....????" something like that, or the initials of the guy who owned the factory?

Skip,to further confirm your can is NOT a German early can,I suggest you take a look at the back cover of Army Motors #53,if you have it.The side mounted jerrycan is with no possible doubt one of those European spouted, two piece made cans on which there is no sure documentation. On the same jeep are present two regular U.S. three piece jerrycans, that prove the two kind were used together in the Pacific Theater. That would also prove that an adapter to use an only fuel nozzle, could be a logical solution...

Not as I thought!

Well guys, even the experts some times drop a lot of bulls#it!So my friend Silvano Borgogno is an exemple.Just take a look at Dino's Website, and under the German section you will see that cans with square pattern indentation existed in 1939 and 1940 already. So the above theory is just a load of though fertilizer.
