Gas/Water Can Website?

OK Luca....or whomever...

I think if someone has a website they can post photos on it is time to start posting them along with a brief description of each. The following pics would be helpful.

1) One of each side showing the letter and style of font for the "W" or the "G" and what is stamped into the side below the "X" reinforcement.

2) One picture of the spout from the front so it can be determined if it is center or off-center mounted and if it is straight eared or rolled eared.

3) Picture of the bottom of the can showing the mfg/date stampings.

4) Pic of the top under the handle if that is where the mfg/date stampings and the possibility of a pressure relief valve can be shown.

5) Pic of the side view in detail showing how can was formed (two-piece like the German ones or folded like the US ones)

Also a chart for all the cans describing the following:
1) Handles
2) Mfg/Date information
3) Mfg location
4) Date information
5) Date location
6) Pressure relief vent present?
7) Can construction type (German two piece/US folded)
Type of lid (Camlok, four-eared straight/four-eared rolled, two-eared straight)

A couple pics of the spouts for German/Brit & US would be helpful to ID the originals from post-war.

If anyone has pics of the Early pre-jerrycan style of the cans mentioned previously as "flimsies" that would be helpfull too.

Well Chuck.My friend Silvano Borgogno,the one with more than 300 cans in his collection,and myself had thought of something like that,but there are a few problems:he has the cans,but has no computer,nor he speaks english.I have a computer,but I am an hopeless case in using it;I have no digital camera nor website,even if I have access to Silvano's cans,and an often debated fluency in your language...For sure I am willing to help.I have often asked on this forum if any one could post pictures of the scarce cans,as USN for instance,but without success.Robin did post his upside down can,(and he was not praised as he deserved).Before this forumwas kindly opened by Ron,someone posted a picture of a huge amount of cans in the ETO.I think it would be nice to have it again,as a sticky locked(is this possible?) post,to act as a" cover "for the forum.After all a great deal of information came out,and more is hopefully bound to surface.I am sorry if my name is more widespread than I would like.If some guys with the correct informations could jump in without being "ashamed" in showing interest for a minor asset such as Jerrycans,they would be welcome and help to dilute the Lucakiki signatures on the issues.This is what prompted me to ask David for a list of german cans,and one of British cans if he could edit that as well.

Hey, you are the guiding light on the Can Forum, I try to be all over the WWII Trailers....it just workd out that way because we care....BobN takes care of the Modifucations Forum the same way....

Man, with your fluency in languages, you should have NO problem with a relatively simple digital camera....once you get one, you'll be posting pics like there was no yesterday....

The buddy with 300 cans.....wow, that is a bit excessive....I was thinking how cool a display and how informative to guys with one or two it would be....

Let's see how this plays out.

I try to keep the list of German and British cans as complete as possible, but I am only interested in WW2 dated cans, since after the war most countries produced their own versions and that would take the subject too far. I only have 1 US, 2 German and 1 British WW2 dated cans, along with a bunch of later cans I'm not really interested in. Luca, if you like you could start a website on geocities.com; free and very easy to build. I'm sure people would help you by sending pics and info.

David,personally I am interested in WWII cans only as well:that is why I did put the WWII dates on my lists.You could do the same,German wwII and British 42 -45.Of course any one wishing to post a post war list,is welcome.If the Manufacturer lists are in alphabetical order,they are easier to check out.Perhaps you can edit them to make them this way.
Chuck,yes 300 plus wwII cans is a LOT,but for sure it is a "library" to pick up pictures from.He owes the acquisition of a WWII USMC can to John Barton,as he did not have one yet,but has some other scarce cans.
We will see what comes out.In the meantime would any guy with pictures of unusual cans,please share them with us?

What a great idea.
I'll be glad to help as much as I can. I have about 50 cans. Mostly WW2 vintage. I also have a digital camera, but, don't know how to use it yet.
Guess I have some homework to do.

Well, I don't have a website, but would be more than happy to help someone who WILL take this on design the layout. As I said, Neil Robinson who does the Mike's Military Motors website offered assistance here, but if Luca would be able to host it, his access to the 300 cans Silviano has stashed would be invaluable....

The assistance to the gee from our Italian Allies would be a nice touch....and mastering a digital camera for someone who can joke and swear in English should pose no problems....the technicalities of the camera are nothing compared to navigating the BS of the Gee in some instances.

So....who ever takes this on, Luca, Neil or Tom.....I'm ready with a bunch of photos and info to contribute to the chart and site when asked!

For the site I did http://pages.sbcglobal.net/zg925/visref.htm (real simple lots of images) I used Microsoft Front page. It is what I like to call user stupid. Which means if your totally inept at writing code it does it for you in the background. If you're used to Micrsoft Word then it's as simple as typing. Also depending on who you use for an ISP you usually get anywhere from 5 to 25 meg of online space. You just need a simple FTP program to move your images to the site. If all else fails I'd be happy to post at my site until something more formal is decided.

Well, unless someone comes up for air real soon...we'll get ol' Dino! to host the "Can" registry. I'll try to get the pertinent questions that potential donors need to answer and you can knock up a listing of each variant we come up with.

Since the key is the photos, give the guy a photo credit who provides the best one you choose to use. Don't be afraid of replacing some not-so- good pics with other, better quality ones with better detail.

Once we get a pic of each variant, we can direct people to that site so they can find out what they have.

I'll do something in EXCEL and you can do what you need to customize it to your site so it is user friendly and the most helpful.
