To my opinion every jeep had those holes untill restoration was performed, it would make no sence to create a swimming pool in a jeep.
Very early slat grills had them already, why should they have stopped to do so ?
They should have done it if a substitute should have become standard.
My jeeps have good toolbox floors because bubba made new bigger holes in there as the original drain hole proved to get sludged all the time.
I have 4 slat grills, one GPW '42, One MB '43, all with those holes present.
Sometimes they are very hard to find under many layers of paint, or with dirt inside the toolboxes, but they are there.
The same type of hole was made each side of the windshield, except Ma's and very early slat grills.

Are you talking about the bottom left corner? I thought they were in the inside side wall so I just took a quick shot of it. I will get another today. I am a Dodge man ( have done 5) and I know crapola about these jeeps. I have a lot to learn. I am the second owner of this GPW. The origional owner was a returning vet who bought it from the City of Sacramento California in 1946 , built it it's own trailer and took it to Arizona to be his " Hunting Jeep". It is rust free and has the matching engine with 737 miles on it. He painted it white so he could find it in the woods and removed all the handles so I have to locate all the holes and redrill them. He died in 2005 and I bought it from his daughter.

Tool Box Holes
My May,1942, GPW has 3/8 inch drain holes, half covered, on the inboard side of the tool boxes. In addition, a rectangular hole punched into the floor on the wheel side of the tool box floor.

This topic was well covered less than a week ago. I guess the topic title was a little misleading.
Script GPW bodys do have them and so do ACM type II.
It also sounds like ACM type I have them, but I have not checked mine.
Of coures nothing is always, but it seems like at least most have them.
I keep hearing about the hole for the seat "L" bracket, or trailer socket holes over and over. These aren't the drain hole. The are of drain hole, isn't even pictured in most of the photos that come up here. The photo posted by rgus actually shows just a sliver of the drain hole where the floor meets the side pannel, but it just looks like a black dash.
Go to http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=87640
and scroll down to the two posts by Rml1708. These are the best pictures I have seen in either of the posts here, and should clear up any confusion about what holes we are checking for.
Once we are all looking for the same holes, then we should find some more definitive answers.

tool box drains
One reason it seems that the Script GPWs at least do not ALWAYS have the drain hole is evident on my 4/24/42 Chester, PA Script....
On the passenger side, the floor of the tool box is welded at the correct height in the box so that the hole in the interior wall allows any water in the tool box to drain into the rear seat area. On the driver's side the floor was welded just a bit too high on the walls and the hole for the drain is hidden by the 1/2" flange of the floor that is tacked against the interior wall of the rear seat area.
The hole in the side wall is there, but if you stick a screwdriver or ice pick in it you hit that flange/tab....
No, there has been no body work or Bubbafication over there so this is a factory installation setup. This problem might have occured on more than a few jeeps when they were welded together.....

tool box drains
Ok, more fuel for the fire.
My 3-45 MB body has the drain holes, sorry cannot
find my s/n info, I bought the body tub separate.
The Frank Buck collection:
6-42 GPW s/n34386 drain holes.
10-42 GPW s/n 72015 drain holes.
12-42 GPW s/n 88300 drain holes.
?-43 GPW s/n 124460 drain holes.
7-44 MB s/n 356105 drain holes.
9-44 MB s/n 375617 drain holes.
3-45 GPW s/n 258913 drain holes.
6-45 GPW s/n 271022 drain holes.
Looked at all these jeeps today, holes are all very
visable, Frank stated that he has always observed
drain holes in the tool boxes.
With this and the other info already posted, I beleive that
the drain holes should be there.
