tool box drain holes?

Post by Todd Haley » Tue Jan 02, 2007 5:58 pm

Hi all,
are there drain holes in the tool box bottoms? I have what appears to be a 3/8" hole in the center of the lh toolbox bottom,(other side is gone) the hole also has a clinch nut on the underside, (the nut looks like the ones for the tranny hump cover). Is this correct or a Bubba Mod? Thanks,
Todd Haley

L/H Tool box have a hole for the Trailer socket wire in the bottom. Think the trailer socket was introduced late in 1942.

Toll boxes have one "drain" hole ea, that let the water drain inboard against the rear pass. seat. At least this is correct for the ACM II..... Can check the ACM I and the Ford bodys later if no one jumps in with the info.

Happy New Year Todd :D

Cheers,
Frank..

no holes

Post by Chuck Lutz » Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:59 am

My 4/42 Script Ford tub has the rear seat pivot riveted to the inside of the tub. It has another hole above where the seat goes for the "L" bracket to keep it on the pivot goes. No other holes I can find for letting water out of the tool boxes into the rear passenger area. Is this where you were thinking there was one Frank?

Frank, Now that you mention it, the hole is more than likely for the wire as the tub has the trailer mod. done to it. So, there is NO other holes in the box floor for drainage? There are no holes in the inner panel that would let water drain to the inside on my tub,(Ford Script) that I can find. Here's a pic of what I have to go by, anyone else have a pic of the tool box bottom on a Script tub?

 I wish my script tubs tool boxes HAD bottoms  My '45 MB had the remains of a rubber grommet in the wire hole & I seem to recall that my '45 GPW that I sold had a rubber grommet there as well, despite the rubber shortage thing & felt grommets on the firewall. Also, I believe that they both were ACM II bodies with the interior drain holes. I'll look later tonight to see if the script body that I have access to has similar holes.

 Sorry, it'l take more effort thatn I can expend right now to access either of the two script tubs I have here in the garage. They're stacked & packed with parts such that it would take a bit of effort to access & it's already nearly 2:30 AM & I just got home from my 12 hr at work. If nobody else posts anything by then I'll try on the weekend.

Todd:

I can’t vouch for a ’42, but on the ’45 GPW there is a drain hole for each toolbox. It is a 3/8” hole that is drilled/punched in the wheelhouse inner panel before the unit is assembled. The floor of the toolbox was then installed and covered the bottom half of the hole.

Thanks guy's for the info! :) So, it appears that the Ford body did not have drains, and ACM II bodies had the hole in the inner wheel house. Now we need a few ACM I body reports to narrow down a timeframe for the addition of the hole.
rgus, is your body ACM I? I'm not sure when they started production. What about the Willys built bodies? Did they have the drain? Sorry for all the questions but I think this kinda stuff one is of the best parts of G503'n! :D

Hi Todd
Ford used there own body till about the end of Aug 43 i think :?: But i would think different plants had different cut off dates before they changed to the ACM Type 1 bodies :?:
Im sure Tom would be able to shed a bit more light into it as he really is the Guru on GPW production :D

Some pictures have been added to the following thread that really belong here, but the answer so far seems to be "probably", or at least "yes" on some types of bodies, as the bodies with toolbox drain holes all seem to have 3/8" dia. holes 4 1/4" from the rear panel placed so that the mid-section of the hole is at the level of the bottom of the tool box. The info is still being collected to see if it's a brand or year type of thing, but I doubt it could be an add-on/mod thing as it was obviously done prior to the assembly & spot-welding of the body. So far the sample is too small to really prove much, other than the fact that some body tubs have this feature.
