I pulled the brake drum
Brakes were not working at all so I pulled the brake drum. All interior parts were heavily soaked in oil, so I imagine the yoke seals are worn. Are these difficult to replace? Also, can anyone tell me which parts will be needed? Will I be able to clean the brake shoes or must they be replaced? TIA, Frank

Not too hard to replace. Changing the shifter rod seals require a special tool (had one made and works fine). You can get a cheap seal puller from NAPA. I suggest replacing the shoes as once the shoes are saturated in oil, it is darn near impossible to get them completley clean. someone else might have a better idea on how to clean up old brake shoes.

The tool to the left is used to insert the seals.
The 2 peice removal tools are on the right.
The threaded tool with the nut is hollow and goes over the shifter rods and screwing into the seals. Then the piece on the right goes over the threaded piece and the nut is screwed down thereby pulling the seals out.
I have used it a few times and it works great. You would be hard pressed to remove the 2 seals in each shaft without this neat tool.
The tool can be seen in the manulas like TM 9-2320-246-34 page 2-2. This is what we started with and then did some measuring to have a machine shop make it. Took a few times to get it right.

I have had 3 people ask where they can get one so I will measure it out so that if someone wants, they can have a machinest make them one.
Mine is made out of common low carbon steel as opposed to machine steel. It works fine for my purposes but would wear out is used too many times. If it is made out of low carbon steel the price to make it is MUCH less than a machine steel unit. I figure I cant possibly have to use it enough times to wear it out but If I let people borrow it I would have to get another one made.
