A bit mis leading there.
This should be a good thread to dispell many roumors about the different models of M-274's
First off, I have never seen a mule, A-5 or what ever, with "electronic ignition". I would love to be disproved on that statement.
The first M-274 is the base line ( the A-nothing)
I believe the A1 had some differences like seals and the magnito was an impluse type.
I also believe that all mules EXCEPT the A-5 had Mag wheels and deck. The A-5 wheels (aluminum) have "alcoa" stamped on them.
I think the A-3 and A-4 were upgrades of the A-nothing, and A-2's where they replaced the Willys 4 cyl engine (having to install blocks to raise the deck).
Not sure if I have my numbers correct, but this should be a good thread to sort all the models out.
One of the reason the 4 cyl mule (A-nothing up to A2) is rare, is because many of them were upgraded with the 2 cyl engine thereby making them A-3's and A-4's. Or something like that.

MULE WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION
I do not know what kind of proof you are looking for that mules had electronic ignition, but I can assure you that they exist. The wide tire A5's with electric start that the 101st used had electronic ignition. My father has several examples of these.
A3's are retrofitted M274's
A4's are retrofitted M274A1's
A2's are factory produced
M274-M274A4 have magnesium deck, wheels, axle housings, etc.
A5's have aluminium deck, wheels, axle housings
Something I have noticed especially of mules that were in service into the 80's that parts were interchanged between models. I have rebuilt mules that were bought from DRMO's by my dad that have A5 decks on A2-a4 chassis. This was very common with mules he had bought from Ft. Cambell.

I would like to see a photo of the electronic ignition units. I don't doubt that there would be one but have never seen one. I assume that it does not have a magnito? Did it come from the factory with the electronic ignition or was that a MWO upgrade?
By now I should know better than to say NEVER when it comes to MV's.

I'll get some pictures when I get a chance. The magnito is replaced with a distributor of some sort. It uses the case of a regular fairbanks morse mag,but has electronic internals. It does not need a power feed to it however. I'm not sure how they work but they donot pulse like a regular mag. From the mules that I have seen this on which have been always wide tire, electric start ones from FT. Cambell, they were probally a MWO. I'm not sure if the 101st did this or what. I can tell from my experience and that of others that this set up wasn't the most reliable. Again I'll work on getting pictures.
