M38A1 Hood Numbers
I am about to order new hood marking for my 55 A1. I don't know what the real hood number is. So what should I make it. I thought about using the serial number, but was wondering if the hood number should start with any numbers specific to A1's. Also what would the proper text font be of Rick Larsen's examples?

It will start with a 20 with 6 numbers behind for a total of 8. The state of TX actually recognizes former military vehicle and allows you to use you hood numbers as the license plate. If you were to run the last 6 numbers of my hood number it would come up with the registration information.

For the sake of keeping the resto playing field level the preferred custom hood number will consist of the old style early 208xxxxx (total 8 digits 1952) or later 209xxxxx (8digits 1952-54) or later 201xxxxxx (9 digits 1954) or later 2Axxxx (late 1954 & on) where you substitute your serial number for the x's. This way as the jeeps change hands it becomes obvious that the original hood number was not known and the serial was substitued for the ending. Some examples would be:
Sep 1952 MD21623 20821623
Oct 1952 MD25131 20925131
Feb 1954 MD71859 201071859
Jul 1954 MD74819 2A4819
All of this assumes you're talking a Army M38A1. Navy and USMC would be different. USAF used the Army assigned hood registration numbers untill about 53 or 54 then switched to a registration number system using the contract year, a letter desiginating vehicle purpose/use and the basic registration number IE 62B6789.

Thanks Wes for the detailed info. So I will use 2A2320 as my number. I am kind of jumping the gun, beacuse I have still to repaint the jeep but am just trying to nail this stuff down now so I am not rushing later.
