The army got rid of all 1903s serial number 800000 and earlier in 1927.Because of poor heat treatment in early receivers. They had many blow up.

Re: M1903 Springfield For Sale
There has been a lot of research that suggests the problem is not nearly as dramatic as once thought. Pretty interesting stuff.

Nice piece.
Would the Army (or any competent gunsmith) put a 1942 dated barrel on a defective receiver?
Don't think so.
When the Army gets "rid of" defective weapons don't they go in the shredder?
Pretty sure they don't sell them to the public.

Re: M1903 Springfield For Sale
There is a lot of published material on the 1903 rifle. I would recommend seeking some out.
My favorite resource is the NRA magazine, The Rifleman. The military arsenals had/have
metallurgists that performed hardness tests on the receivers prior to disposing. Some good
ones became National Match Rifles. The Marines used '03s early in WW2. And I would guess,
as uneducated as it may be, that this rifle is one of those. 1903 with a 1942 barrel. Yes, it
is most assuredly [no provenance needed on my part, and I don't know the seller] a great
example of what could be a USMC rifle, with a fantastic serial number and a great story to
tell if it could only speak the words. And the asking price is more than generous. Again, I'm
not very well educated on the topic. Do your own research.
It's a fascinating history of a great rifle.
Good luck with the sale.

In 1927 the army got rid of all the pre 800,000 rifles that were sold as surplus. The Army NEVER rebarreled these if it has a WWII barrel it was done by a civilian gunsmith. In 1927 the government sold everything surplus they shredded nothing nor demilled anything.

Very nice low number rifle. I have one also and have put many lower velocity reloads (mine) through it no issues. GLWS.

Re: M1903 Springfield For Sale
Interesting documents recently found at the archives debunk the bad “low” receivers.
