Disc brakes

Post by kazaz123 » Thu Dec 11, 2025 12:33 pm

I recently acquired a 1951 M38. The complete drivetrain, except the engine, was completely rebuilt by a professional shop. Frame, transmission, transfer case, axles, brakes and frame.

With the purchase I got about $4,000 worth of new parts, including a disc brake conversion kit. Plan is to sell this Jeep after restoration of the body and bolting it back together.

The question is whether to install the disc brakes (worth about $800) or leave the newly refurbished drum brakes. The previous owner was going to create an off-road vehicle but decided it was too nice to hack upwhich is why be bought the conversion kit. Since I plan to sell it I need to know whether installing the disc brakes detracts from the value or adds to it. If it detracts I will just sell the kit.

Which style of disc brake kit is it?

If it is the I believe GM Style typically available from Kaiser Willys, this would require spaces to run with original style steel wheels

If it is the Track Kick style from Brennans Garage, these will fit under the standard M38/M38A1 16" steel kelsey Hayes wheels.

I think the brennan kit is a great addition for a driver jeep, and I have them on both of mine (Cj3A and 51 M38) the kaiser kit since it needs wheel spacers I would sell so you dont have to source spacers.
