Bastogne Barracks, don't miss a visit
If you happen to pay a visit to the Bastogne War Museum and the Mardasson, don't miss that fantastic collection of military vehicle.
The collection is displayed just near the recently restored General Anthony McAuliffe HQ. It's still a military domain.
I could not resist to take a few photos for you during my last visit, one week ago.

My father was in that type of Bren Carrier during the war, in the 3rd U.S. Army.

Re: Bastogne Barracks
I was happy to see that the only running Tiger II was still there.
It came from Saumur (F) for the Battle of the Bulge 80th commemoration last year.
A Panzer IV.
A very rare Jagdpanzer 38(T)
A restored M41 Walker Bulldog waiting for its markings. Very noisy tank. We had one on our proving ground to test fire ammunition.

Re: Bastogne Barracks
There are vehicles outside waiting for a complete restoration in the shop.
I bet with you that you will find the horrible error
You are welcome as a volunteer to help them during a few day's or week's

You are welcome.
And it's so close to the War Museum that it's easy to visit that museum.
Just a remark check on Internet if they are open, because sometimes in the War Museum they announce that the Bastogne Barracks are closed which is not true.
Also to know : The Bois Jacques, a few minutes drive from the Barracks, is now surrounded by a high and solid fence.
You need to use the War Museum ticket to enter and walk in the Bois Jacques.

I've been there. Really an amazing museum. Also, just across the street, I believe, is an amazing cemetery where Renée Lemaire is interred.
Well worth the time for a visit.
I've looked Bastogne Barracks up on Google Earth before. Why is a blurred out? We show all our tanks and artillery on Google Earth for the whole world to know what we're up to. Just thought it was odd.
Here's one of our storage areas near where we live:

Waaoh, giant storage area for a giant Army in a giant country
Barracks blurred out : This is because the domain is again military.
It was abandoned by the army a few years ago due to budget restrictions, but the last Minister of Defense (a woman !) has changed the policy.
Now the domain is again military and you are welcomed by a military guard.
I guess they will be using the site for military vehicles maintenance as you can see on my photos.
Thanks for the information on Renée Lemaire in the nearby giant cemetery. I did not know.

Yes, ours are military bases as well, but broadcast to the world of what we have in stock. Maybe by design. This location is just one of many locations here in the US of A.
We'll be going to France later this year in September. Looking forward to seeing some more historical sites there.
I shot this photo when we were at Bastogne Barracks in 2019:

Hi Zeph,
Thanks for the photo.
It will help to find the grave in such a large cemetery.
If you have time, I would advise you to visit the amazing Eperlecques building.

We'll be going to Dunkirk, and this location doesn't appear to be too far from there. I hope we can squeeze it in.
Thank you,

Yes, it’s only a little more than half an hour drive.zepher11 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 3:46 amHi Yves,YLG80 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 9:29 amHi Zeph,
