Re: Abnormally high member requests
Well something just happened after being a "new" person registered my 4th post has restored all my other posts. 13,000 . My pm's are gone plus my contacts through pm's and shows I joined 7 days ago but pretty happy with what I have now.

The other night I started restoring your posts, but it was a slow process done one by one. I got up to about 400 posts when Chris Fourroux said he could do that more efficiently, so you can thank him for restoring your posts. No way to recover the PM stuff I'm afraid.

Well, I find this all very insteresting.
I will have to see if my searches and linked posts are all still available.
viewtopic.php?t=189277
Unfortunately it appears all the links I answer posters questions on all forums and social media just link to the log in page. Even when they log in how are the going to look at the thread?

If they log in before clicking the link (or log in and follow the link again) it should direct them to the originally linked post.

Markie - Mark. FYI when I went to 'quick links' and then did a search based on your name every post you have made shows up.

Re: Abnormally high member requests
what is there not to understand? The Gee instantly became one of the least user friendly forums that I encounter in searching and researching.
I personally have had trouble directly logging into the forum for a while, but I didn't need to solve it because I could still see content through Google and Tapatalk. Now the Google useability is gone.
NOT a fan.
How could you possibly see this as "no change"?????? This is a HUGE, and negative change.

As an admin for 10 or more Military vehicle sites, I don’t think you understand the magnitude of scammers that are pummeling “private” sites let alone “public” sites, better yet….the admins don’t get PAID anything do monitor and admin these sites.YLG80 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 1:41 pmSo the hackers have won the battle!
Too bad!
After restricting the post content modification, now there is a restriction to the knowledge access.
I do not see any interest in a private forum, sorry,
The forum will never again spread the spirit of the true collector: the free sharing of knowledge to as many people as possible.
Gradually the most interesting knowledge will disappear from the Google search results and will be inacessible to non-members.
That means that the forum will no longer attract new collectors, particularly young ones.
It will gradually become a « select lounge ».![]()

The sites literally have no other options to combat the scammers and BOTS, it’s easy for you to just make a blanket statement that all is lost and it’s the end of hobby, free speech etc….perhaps you have a better idea?
Recently I had a member who was scammed threatening to sue the admin for allowing the scammer into the forum…

Re: Abnormally high member requests
I can see the "For sale" listings being behind the firewall, keeps bad actors and scammers at bay.
But....(and there us always a "but")...
If there is a newbie looking for something, perhaps just checking out the prices seeing if he wants to get into the hobby (after all, there aren't many MV price guides out there), he won't be able to.
I was looking for a specific make of car and the leading marque club forum and classifieds were locked. Not a great way to grow the hobby or interest in the marque.
Just something to consider.

Re: Abnormally high member requests
I have setup and managed several commercial web sites and a forum, so I know and understand how they can be attacked by hackers or scammers.Retired War Horses wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 8:54 amAs an admin for 10 or more Military vehicle sites, I don’t think you understand the magnitude of scammers that are pummeling “private” sites let alone “public” sites, better yet….the admins don’t get PAID anything do monitor and admin these sites.
As mentioned by another user, defeating scammers is each one affair, first.
Like these users: viewtopic.php?p=1978015#p1978015
I’m wondering how scammers could be effectively filtered when you, the admin, have to approve each day up to 45-50 newly registered users.
But that is another story.
As far as I remember, I never wrote that « all is lost and the end of the hobby etc… ».The sites literally have no other options to combat the scammers and BOTS, it’s easy for you to just make a blanket statement that all is lost and it’s the end of hobby, free speech etc….perhaps you have a better idea?
When you are facing such a massive attack using hacked routers ( https://cyberscoop.com/fbi-operation-ch ... x-typhoon/), you have no choice but to carefully monitor the website access log and play with ip blocking or ip changing.
That is a permanent war and you cannot sleep on what you have already done.
But that does not have anything to do with our hobby…and I hope you will allow me to have my own opinion on « going private » which has nothing to do with the admins and/or moderators hard work.

Re: Abnormally high member requests
I really do believe we have beaten this to death. AGAIN, the owner of this site, Ron Fitzpatrick, made the decision to go private because the scammers were creating havoc and stealing members money. It has helped greatly and and the member requests have gone through the roof!
Yves, you are entitled to your "opinion" as is anyone else.
All the argument over this is ridiculous.
