Military Vehicles banned in Michigan on public roads!

Discussion of Local, State, and Federal issues regarding MV Legislation, MV use restrictions, MV registration refusals, etc. As these issues may ultimately affect other jurisdictions, information and education of all MV owners is crucial for the future ownership and use of our MVs.
This is not a board for Political discussion.
This is not a Q&A Forum on how to title or register a MV.

National Guard? That's stretching it.
Where do many of these vehicles come from? That's right, the National Guard.

It was the release of a few thousand HUMVEES in the last couple of years that tipped the scales against MVs. Michigan is not the only state to ban them.
National Guard should not be allowed to use state roads anyway; they pay no road tax do they?
Ban them all.

If the Guv was truly against banning "vehicles intended for off-road use only" from getting titled/registered then, by that definition alone it would seem that covers tracked vehicles which were, by design strictly "off-road" vehicles. OK, I get that they want them off the highway but they SHOULD still be registered and licensed for use "off-road" in places that allow such activity. Maybe a different color license plate to make it easy for a ranger or LEO to see if they are "legal" to be driven around on your back 40 acres?

Digging deeper into this mess, does the ban cover any "military vehicle" or just those "intended for off-road use only"? That would mean Staff Cars from WWII and WWII jeeps and 1 1/2 ton trucks and 2 1/2 ton trucks basically modified civilian vehicles were taboo. Therefore, any truck that has a gasoline engine or diesel engine, four or six wheels would be banned. That would or should carry over into all modern trucks.

Heck, if WWII jeeps were to be banned as "vehicles intended for off-road use only" then every Wrangler, CJ, etc. which are the descendants of that lil' ol' G-503 are banned as well?

Sounds like either terribly poorly defined legislation if the target was simply a HumVee...and what about those who already have one registered? Will they be immediately be confiscated? Not allowed to re-register or transfer registration or will some sense prevail here and allow those already licensed and registered to be "grandfathered in" for the life of the vehicle? If not that places an undue burden on current owners.

Hey, if they have a seatbelt law, a smog law, a turn signal law, a rear-view mirror law, etc. etc. do they plan to screw those owners of classic vehicles made BEFORE those laws were enacted?

I understand from people in the know that Vermont will register any vehicle easily for non residents. Can anyone confirm this ? this would be One way around this rule. I spoke to a New Yorker at a recent event who told me about it and his WW2 jeep has a Vermont plate on it. All he needed was a Bill Of Sale.

The bills have passed in favor of the Military vehicles. The transportation committee 8 to 1 and now move to the senate floor for voting. Please have everyone use the contact law makers threw SEMA link provided below. It will open up your e mail and place the contacts for you.
SEMA link
https://www.semasan.com/legislative-ale ... tling-pass

Here also s a sample e mail which can be used for the body of the e mail.

To whom it may concern.

My name is xxxxxxx. I fully support senate bills 344, 345, 346. I ask for your continued support with your yes vote on the following bills to allow for registering surplus military vehicles here in Michigan. Please help by keeping History alive and in motion here in the Motor city capital of the world. We can never forget the men and women that serve /served our great country by honoring the vehicles that safety transported them from point a to point b.

S.B. 345 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to define “military surplus” and “historic military surplus” vehicles.

S.B. 346 would exempt military surplus vehicles from certain emission inspections.

S.B. 344 would authorize registration and titling of military surplus vehicles that adhere with certain equipment standards. It would also allow the issuance of historic vehicle license plates to historic military surplus vehicles.

These bills recognize the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.

These bills acknowledge that military surplus vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.

These bills would bring the state in line with others that are moving to allow former military vehicles similar accommodations as those available to civilian vehicles.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your yes vote at the next Senate meeting.

Sincerely,

Xxxxx

To my knowledge, it still sucks for some of us humvee owners.
