Re: Filterette
Hi John,
I guess that you don't have a filterette at all? How early is your GPW? from what I can make out VEP had the hinged Tobe like was used in Slat Grills.
My friend made one for his Slat, using drawings from Jeepdraw. It looks the part.

Re: Filterette
John,
April , i'm not to sure if that would be that model. I have just been trying to find a post on FB, to no avail. I'm waiting for the new GPW Judging Standards, written by Mike Wright to come out. My friend already had the 3 filter units to use as a start for his filterette.

Re: Filterette
I have an April ‘42 and, determined through research years ago, the hinged filterette is the correct one for first contract GPWs. I searched for a while to find a good one. Since then, I’ve seen only a couple come up for sale on the auction site and swap meets. If you find one, you’ll have to pay for it. I think I paid $400 for the one I have in excellent condition and I think that would be a deal nowadays.

Re: Filterette
Dave,
I'm curious as to why your friend's doesn't work. Is it 100% fabricated or only the cover? I just bought a filterette without the cover and will eventually make a hinged cover for it, as I need the hinged cover type for my 1st contract GPW (I think).

Re: Filterette
Is the filterette unit the same as the later (standard) model? That only the cover changed but not the insides?

Re: Filterette
Hello David,
No there were several different models used by Ford and Willys throughout production .
My August , 1942 GPW uses a 2 screw Ford marked Spraque JX -17 filterette.
Also hard to find, and expensive , the price has doubled in the last 2 years.
Your best bet is eBay, as all the vendors seem sold out of the nos ones from recent years. That is where I recently got this one, and restored it, well the cover, yesterday, as I was missing it on my jeep.
I find it strange that this particular cover seems to be missing on so many gpw's !!
Maybe JMP will start making the missing covers or entire units ??
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: Filterette
Thanks Ray, Jon has a drawing for a hinged slat filterette housing on JeepDraw, but I wondered if the innards are the same for all those filterettes... but I guess you could also just put a junction block in unless you actually want to mount a working radio set?

Re: Filterette
Hello David,
I am not sure if the innards are the same between the many variants.
I do think that maybe the mounting bolts are a standard hole pattern in the firewall.
So you could use any under dash filterette to do the same job.
The other filterettes had 1 screw covers, 2 screw covers, no screw covers, markings, tags, unmarked covers. So quite a variety out there
I don't have an early filterette, other than the one I posted above.
I need a hinged one for my slat grill jeep someday !
Later jeeps, went to a filter system box that mounted on the inner passenger side wall, under the passenger's seat.
Someday I will like to get a working radio set for my GPW .
It had holes drilled into the passenger's side wheel well for a radio, and has some holes in the side for a possible antenna mount.
There are nos underdash filterettes available on ebay still.
I think $97 , as I bought a couple.
They are for slightly later jeeps, but still would be the same as far as use and function. Just not "early 42" model filterettes.
Here is the JX-17 installed onto the filterette base in my August, 42 GPW, that was long missing the cover. One more thing completed for this Jeep !
Best Regards,
Ray
