wiring on 24v oil gauge

Post by timo376 » Fri Oct 09, 2020 1:02 am

i have recently purchased a 1957 M201. The oil gauge isn't registering
I have checked the wiring and would like to confirm which wire goes to which post on the back of the gauge?
There are 3 terminals and at present they are wired as follows..
Red to the circuit breaker, middle (black) to earth, black white stripe to sensor/engine

There is a wiring diagram on M201.com Perhaps it will help.

It can be found here - http://www.m201.com/tech/elect.htm

Remove the contact at the engine side on the sensor.
Switch the ignition key on .
Touch the ground with that contact at the end of the wire and if the gauge is OK it should register at full scale.
If the gauge is OK, that means that your sensor needs to be replaced.

looking forward to it too,
enjoying doing all those little jobs that seem a good idea at the time !!
decided to renew the wiring on the back lights and add an extra brake light bulb, trying to identify which wire is for what is fun, especially when the bits of dried muck on the chassis falls into your face :-)

Do you have a Yeager oil pressure gauge? Have you fixed the problem?

Not fixed yet, I'm doing stuff at the back of the jeep, as the garage space is restricted. I'm working my way forward :-)

So what work does it need? Anything major or mostly cosmetic?

well it seems it requires a replacement back axle :-(
i had the brakes checked by a local land rover specialist who informed me that at some point in the past a bearing in the rear wheel hub had seized causing it to wear away a small part of the hub carrier, the bearing had been replaced a a shim put it to fill the gap, but on taking the hub off, the shim had moved and wedged the hub, but they were able to eventually remove it. But they say the axle needs replacing as the bearing may fail as now has some small travel on the axle !
so hopefully going to pick up a replacement axle in a couple of weeks and get it to an jeep specialist to sort :-)

then there's a new fuel tank to be fitted as the current one leaks :-(

I put new wiring on the back lights and managed to add an extra brake light bulb :-)
and then its just the personal touches :-)

Shame about the axle problem, but I guess unseen problems are always a risk buying these old vehicles.

Feeling well chuffed, :-D

Jeep safely back from the garage, Thanks to John at Inskip Motors.
replacement rear axle, new fuel tank, new brakes shoes and cylinders, oil change, MPH speedo fitted and some tightening up and general tinkering!
Just need to get out and bed the new shoes in.

As for the oil pressure gauge, having spoken to John i think it will be replaced with a mechanical one, so problem solved :-)
Going to accumulate some bits to go for an electronic ignition too... watch this space !!

Good to hear you're on the road again. I got an electronic ignition unit 10 years ago, designed to fit into a wartime dizzy. It lasted 1600 miles then died. Irony that the only modern part of the Jeep was the bit that failed! After much arguement and the manufacturer testing it and saying it was fine, they suddenly changed their minds and sent a new replacement. That has been fine ever since, though I carry points and a condensor in the spares box, just in case!

I did have problems initially when I fitted it. The heat generated by the spark was hot enough to distort and close up the electrode gap of the Champion plugs. Two closed up far enough to short out. I switched to NGK plugs and haven't had problems since.
