This is a british/ canadian jeep and this mod was common to give extra storage of fuel/oil/ water cans.

Re: Jeep dame of the Day
Got a kick out of looking at the previous photo of the 3 soldiers trying to pull back a jeep with three attractive women. First thing I noticed was the axe and shovel with the bare wood: looks like unstained/painted handles, newly issued (or just put there for the photo)
Other things in the photo: Soldiers have denim pants and shiny polished shoes.
The house in the background is definitely American architecture, not European, therefore a US installation, but where?
Tents have wooden foundations and are neatly and crisply assembled (by the book?)
The guys are all “good looking” with what looks like Jim Carey on the right
Black Sheller steering wheel
WW1 doughboy-style steel helmet in passenger’s seat area
Early square gas tank sump (Slat grill MB?)
No stars on this clean (newly issued?) jeep.
Anybody add anything?
John

I love this Foreign Service cover. It's framed in my office.

I would be interested in reading that issue of Foreign Service. Particularly the “lost generation“ story the cover mentions.
BTW - Great photo of “I dream of Genie” with a brunette Barbara.
