ISO MB cylinder head

Post by D_Conrad » Sat Mar 14, 2020 2:20 pm

I am looking for a cylinder head for my February 43 MB. I have a late war MB cylinder head for trade. Located in Tucson Arizona. Not sure of the casting date. If anybody can tell me where to locate that. But it does say both jeep and willys on it.

The casting date is in Month/Day (ie, 9/5 for example in my photo) on the upper left corner above the casting number (639660 or 639660c for MB heads).

That head has casting characteristics that are consistent with similar MB hads cast in 1945. There are noticeable differences with heads cast during the same March time period from 1944. I can say with absolute certainty that you head was indeed cast on March 24, 1945. It would be appropriate for an MB delivered in mid to late April 1945. Additionally it would be appropriate for an MB engine cast in the second or third week of March 1945.

I hope this helps you and others.

I would recommend a Jan ‘43 head, yes. You can get more specific if you care to. What’s the casting date of the engine? Is it a Jan ‘43 block?

The serial number would indicate a lot also but the casting date is located just ahead of the casting numbers, on the lower right side of the block. There is also a machining date on the bottom of the block on the machined oil pan surface near the rear corner by bearing retainer.

D. Conrad,

I have a block machined 2/4/43 if your block ends up being early Jan 43 or late Dec 42.
