Re: 1944 Ford GPW-231738 - "Potshot"
Finished up welding and grinding the rear of the tub and also got it spot welded after to get the proper look. Happy with the result.
onto the front! Theres not much to save for the floor but it seems like the previous owner kept some of the original floor underneath. Archaeological work ahead.
Are 44 GPWs supposed to have that tab next to the side step? Can't find it on my original one, and the repro one has it.
Thanks

Re: 1944 Ford GPW-231738 - "Potshot"
Started removing the extra plates that were welded to the front floor. Obviously I'll have to redo all the floor but its still neat to see the original floor underneath, at least what's left of it.
Also I might be able to salvage the rectangular indent in the passenger footwell.
I think I'll need to pull both cowl supports to do repairs, just gotta find all the spot welds on it.
I think I'll be able to save the most of the angled floor near the pedals and under the glovebox in the passenger footwell, but all the floor that is flat is like swiss cheese.

Hello Boyso,
Looking good !
First, the step repair panel you have is an MB only.
The GPW has actually a separate step that is spot welded onto the vertical side panel.
Believe it or not, you have half the original step and it would be pretty easy to weld a patch
into it, and would be an easier job.
The GPW steps can be found on ebay, or maybe Ron has them as well.
Cut it to fit and make the repair.
Also, I just repaired my transmission hump, that was damaged like yours.
I welded in a rear angled section I found from a rotted out jeep tub.
That section was all that was left. I cleaned it up and welded to fit.
Went great.
I also would see what parts of your floor are ok , and look into maybe getting a new flat floor section from Ron or Midwest Military and grafting it in to your front floor vertical foot areas.
It is also made to be used with you existing transmission hump.

Kind of like making a quilt
Welding pieces together to get a great result.
Stay Safe !!!!!
Practice Social distancing !!
Spray down any UPS or mail packages with bleach, as they may be tainted.
Keep us posted !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the clarification for the steps!
The left one is in not too bad shape but the right one is pretty mangled!
And yeah, I found the rear half of the transmission hump from a member here so I'll be able to patch it up easily!
For the floor, I'll probably fab up my own with the JeepDraw drawings, but I just wish I couldve gotten a gas tank sump well from JMP before the covid

Good work! But i wonder why you didn't get this tub sand blasted first, that would give a true sense of what you have to work with.

I don't have a good enough compressor or a trailer to tow it to someone who could!
And I didnt wanna risk making it worse with warps from heat.
Works well with my wire wheels !

I see it this way, I don't have a ton of money, but I have about 30 years til I retire
Always said I should be done by the time I retire, so I can't go too fast now!

Re: 1944 Ford GPW-231738 - "Potshot"
Thank you sir!
I wouldn't call myself skilled or anything, just very stubborn
When I started, I didn't know how to change spark plugs.
I didn't have any tools except a socket set from my late grandpa.
Lots of youtube videos and reading and patience and here I am, 8 years later. While it may take me longer than most, I'm enjoying it and its my way of decompressing after work weeks.
