45...if you feel the "need for speed" put it on a trailer and tow it...you can do 70+ that way.

Better to watch that video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF00uDTy6Oo
It helps to imagine what could happen to you when driving too fast a vehicle made to win the war, and not any race

If you are going to play hard, a roll cage is quite a good idea. Bam Bam again, about 13 mins in;

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
Has anyone read the Post War CJ-2A sales brochures for CJ-2A and CJ-3A.
They share much of the running gear with MB/GPW. Jeeps were not made to be parked in the garage, they were meant to be useful transportation.

Maybe if you are stuck in 1955 when a fast speed on most US roads was 50 MPH. Cars, roads, and people, are vastly different.

The Willys CJ-2A thru 70's CJ-5 Brochures are on line, take a moment to read the information. I drove my 4 CYL Jeeps for work and pleasure in the 60's on 70MPH posted I-95, and no, I did not do it at the posted 70MPH.

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
I suppose my real answer is: "Fast enough to make my girlfriend uncomfortable."
Took her awhile to get in for a quick jaunt around town at <30 MPH.

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
I guess Joël is referring to that brochure (CJ-2a - 1946) :
The brochure is really talking about technical stuff and versatility.
I'm not sure that any farmer will be sensitive to pistons in "Aluminum alloy; tin plated to prevent scufling."
He will be more sensitive to "Horsepower 60 at 4000 R.P.M. Taxable horsepower 15.63."
You will remark that a Jeep will carry men and tools ... not women !

That's the only reference to speed in that 7 pages brochure. The brochure is really talking about technical stuff and versatility.

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
I've had my overdrive equipped GPW up to 72 mph verified with a GPS.
I've cruised with it for hours at 62 mph heading to the old DTC, with a buddy in his F250 behind me running interference on Interstate 10. RPMs in overdrive are about the same as at 45 mph out of overdrive. I balance my tires (NDT's on combats) which helps a lot to make it smooth at speed. Steering and brakes are in good shape, too.
Any jeep in good mechanical shape should run to maximum rated speed. If it's otherwise running properly but won't, most likely cause is a mis-adjusted throttle. Meaning it's not getting wide open with the pedal to the floor. Most of my friend's jeeps had mis-adjusted throttles when I first looked at them.

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
Thanks YLG80 for that sales brochure picture. If Willys thinks a CJ2A with 5.38 gears is good for 60 mph then a GPW with 4.88s should be OK at 66 mph!..... Not going to try it..... I'm good at a steady 55-60.... on a good smooth straight road.

The same question was discussed in 2014 in the CJ2a forum here : https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/top- ... 33938.html

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
So.....while driving a CJ2A down the road, does it have the bellcrank mounted to the axle or the frame? I don't believe the CJ2A had a torque reaction spring, so the steering is greatly improved in the CJ2A. That would mean in an emergency braking situation you would be less likely to experience the PULL to one side that could perhaps mean a head-on fatal collision or roll-over.

Re: How fast can you drive a Jeep?
CJ-2A and MB handle the same except for the steering reaction and that is not as bad as made out to be.
