What kind of markings were on the pre war milk/water cans?

Cannot say how they were marked, but they certainly were used.
102nd Cavalry mobilized in 1940 and was sent to Fort Jackson for training.
Pictured are troopers peeling potatoes and putting them in milk cans.

Hard to tell but they look like they’re painted as well with some paint scratched off/worn off.
