Re: Air filters.
Gents, Recently installed the paper filter with rubber plumbing gaskets on top and bottom in my GPW. WOW, jeep has more get-up-and-go and sounds better at idle. VERY easy mod and under $20. The directions and part numbers are here on the G. My local parts store had to order the filter as it is not a common off the shelf unit. I really do not foresee needing to change it as I don't live in a dusty area.

Re: Air filters.
I clean and service the original with SAE #30 Oil every 5-10 years, it's always clean and free of water droplets in the cup. Rusted out cups are commonplace tho especially if the Jeep has sat 75 years with no under the hood service.

Re: Air filters.
Joel, i always thought this should be done annually, or does it depend on what mileage you do ?

Re: Air filters.
Combat vehicles are designed to operate in severe conditions, it's a judgement call for those owners who pamper their vehicles. Dirty oil bath air cleaners will have discolored oil and visible crud in the oil NOTE 1 on the MV LO's indicate the operating conditions such as operation in Desert, or extremely Dusty conditions that require more frequent attention.
NOTE on the front all Lube Orders there is a message about Lubrication Intervals at the extreme upper left hand corner
Not many Jeep restorers subject their Jeeps to combat conditions.

Steve Turchet from "Military Vehicles Magazine" fame is known for his long articles, an early one that I remember was what seemed like several pages on how to back out the six screws on an M-37 or M-38 Taillight door.

Re: Air filters.
I have converted my oil bath to the dry filter because I'm lazy. But an old national guard mechanic expressed that there might be a side benefit of using the oil bath air cleaner as somehow he thinks a little oily air getting through the carb and into the engine halps lubricate it. I don't know about that, but it's a thought.
I've got enough oil under my hood from other items to satisfy that need.
My model T's have NOTHING for an air cleaner. Just the intake to the carb right down on the frame next to the dirt and dust of the roads of the day.

Re: Air filters.
I bought the dry filter conversion kit for my GPW from Ron Fitzpatrick Jeep Parts last week. The kit included a Wix air filter, a base plate and rubber gasket which is needed to keep the dry filter in place inside the mettle housing.
The part number for the dry filter conversion kit from RFJP #A5621-K cost only $35 USD. Installs inside the MB/GPW filter assembly in just 5 minutes....No more fussing with old oil bath filter.
Glad I made the conversion.
