Two of the 6 bolts securing the clutch support bracket were oversized, is this normal?

Image

A mixture of studs and nuts on the head. The studs were all spaced by thick copper washers.

The rear manifold stud is oversized.

Better than I had expected. Pistons and bores seem to be clean, valves are pretty wasted though. Everthing was heavily coked, but I'd had an initial cleanup by the time these were taken.

Image

Original bores? #4 seems to have been sleeved back to original.

Image

I had hoped for 'matching', but 28,522 seems too yawning a gap!

According to "WWII Jeep Guidebook" by Ren Bernier, the original MB frame and engine numbers won't match.
I'm sure the experts can explain about how the Willys engine factory marked the blocks for jeeps, generators, compressors etc.

Yes, I was aware that Willys engine numbers were always higher than chassis numbers, but I don't think by this margin. I might be wrong of course, hopefully someone will chime in who knows.

And off to the peerless Richard Payne at GPW Workshop in Suffolk for a full rebuild. Richard is a longtime Jeep owner and enthusiast, and is quickly establishing a reputation for exemplary attention to the minutest detail. I know that this engine is in good hands.

I presume that 1-9-45 DOD is from the glove box plate. That looks right for your serial number. This jeep would have originally had an engine in the 532xxx range. I've got MB 403587 delivered 1-5-45 with engine # 531446 in my database. Yes the skew between serial number and engine number really was that high.

Your engine MB-433142 was cast 6-18 (1944) based on your photos. I'd love to know the machining date that is stamped near the rear journal bearing if you still have the engine disassembled.

Hi Seth, yes, glove box plate and chassis plate match. I'll ask Richard to photograph the number when he strips the engine down.

Not such good news upon removing the T84. It contained no oil, just half a pint of dirty water.

Doesn't look quite so awful after a jet wash, dry and liberal spray of oil. Put aside until it can go to join the engine with Richard Payne at GPW Workshop for a full strip-down and rebuild.
