Riveted Grill mounts

Post by steven ellis » Fri Aug 02, 2019 5:16 am

The question is are the 2 mounts riveted to the frame for the grill to attach also welded? My early frame is and I saw another 2 piece tray frame welded the same way
A bubba thing, or field mod?

Steven,

Interesting question. I just checked 3 MB 1941 frames,
all 3 have weld spots to the grill brakcet.

Hello Steven and Hinrik,

Interesting post !

I just checked my Willys slat grill frame, with a 2 piece battery tray, and yes both the riveted grill mounts have clean beads of weld on them, on each end.

It looks like a nice factory weld to me .

Best Regards,
Ray

Checked with a couple more friends and theirs also are welded, so I'm not going to mess with them

Hello,

Well I think we can say that this confirms that these welds were a factory weld !!
I hope others who didn't ask the question......didn't "repair" their brackets and get rid of this
clear factory weld :D
It does happen, but this is actually a great post for further education and technical information points on the slat grill jeeps, at least the 2 piece battery tray slat grill jeeps.

I remember seeing a nice restoration here on the G, of a GPW, that someone cut their original
" third type " GPW frame, that had straight frame rails right out to the bumper.
They made an angle cut to make it look like the more standard GPW frame.
( Likely they and many had not seen that frame before, and assumed it was wrong.)
I have that straight frame rail GPW , on a May 1943 GPW jeep.
I also have a "rescued" GPW frame that also has the straight frame rails.

This important post Steven has made is so important to our knowledge base.

Please keep adding your info if you also have a slat grill frame, the more the better !!

Best Regards ,

Ray

Well if its truly noteworthy, and I think it is, then maybe a note should be added to the slat grill serial number/evolution post. My one piece slat with the glove box is not welded and neither is vep 227 with midland one piece tray

Stay focused, this discussion is only for a 2 piece slat grill battery frame.
