eBay collecting sales tax

Post by Michael O. » Tue Jul 09, 2019 10:51 am

I wanted to inform everyone that eBay is collecting sales tax on the item purchase price plus the shipping charge. This will definitely make things much more expensive for all of us who buy anything on eBay. I do not think charging sales tax on shipping is legal but I’ll have to do more research. I have already decided not to buy several items from a seller’s Buy it Now listings since the added costs are too much in my mind...especially taxing the shipping charges which is usually higher than the actual charges anyway.

Gosh, you don't think eBay would collect the tax on the total purchase and shipping then only pay the sellers state the tax on the purchase and keep the difference do you? eBay would never do something like that to collect more revenue and fees.

I once questioned a carpet company on charging sales tax on installation and researched it and came away with they can charge sales tax on everything the provide. Products, services, advice, information, supplies, etc.

I think sales tax on shipping would depend on the individual state rules not what eBay decides.

Its a state by state thing, I think there are 11 or 12 states that require it, New York is one and California goes in to effect on 8/1 I believe. Only a few select states, I'm sure that will change as the commie leftist liberal bastards continue to trample on our rights. Just sayin

Prices on jeeps parts and militaria I collect are already high. Now add shipping and another 7% on top of that...it doesn't take long to realize that some purchases aren't economically viable anymore. I'll just have to spend more cash at the Conventions and shows and purchase more items directly from sellers.

This is coming from the bipartisan "Quill Court Ruling" that went to the supreme court a couple of years ago.

For years the brick and mortar retailers have been howling about the disparity between taxation on walk-in sales versus internet sales. It has been adversely impacting their businesses. Individual states also wanted to be able to collect tax revenue in the ever expanding computer based "virtual" sales. Prior to this ruling, states could only retrieve sales taxes on internet sales if the seller had a physical store in the same state as the buyer...this had been in effect on ebay for years. I am not certain about the illogical political rant on this as I don't recall a constitutional amendment guaranteeing no sales taxes on ebay purchases.
