WOW Tim, she sure looks great!! I am buying THE last set of tail light brackets from our friend. I am excited about that, I gotta tell ya!! OH YEAH, I received an E-mail from John Worthing. I'll be receiving my Tarpaulin in two days, looks like. I can't wait for Saturday so I can make a video.
What about you, when do you receive yours?
Dave, you were able to get one of the small prizes in the unobtainium world. It's kind of like a big treasure hunt, and once in a while you score. And, great news, my tarp showed up. I didn't get any tracking from John, but that is my only minor complaint.
Image
Ah, the smell of fresh canvas. Looks beautiful.
Image
Not sure of what to make of the light color of the leather. Maybe it came from the Brittish White.

I think I am done with the welder for this project. So...time for wood shop. I dug around in my lumber pile to find this hunk of beauty. 2x10 10 feet long white oak left over from a long ago project Chevy bomb truck of my dad's. It hasn't found a use in 12 years, so I am going to use it for the stakes.
Image
Ripped and planed it into 1-1/4"x 2" per the plans on CCKW.org.
Image
I think I have enough, with some extra for mistakes.
Image
It fits well, a little loose, but I can see needing a little slop in order to slide the complete rack in or out.

Next up was to find the 1x4" side slats. The lumber yards up here were not much help, so I had a contact at an awesome Bay Area lumber yard, (Dolan's), special ordered, nice white oak, fair price.
Image
The first order of business was to get a handle on the plan. This is from CCKW.org.
Image
I decided that since I would be assembling and disassembling the assembly, I should number and tag each piece. (Have I been watching Barn Builders too much?) So I came up with my own plan.
Image
I decided which pieces would go best where, by sorting out the various imperfections. There is not much extra here, like 1/2" on each piece.
Image
I want to put a small curved edge on each board, that has a very sharp square edge. Rigged up my ancient router with a 1/8" radius bit. I know it looks hokey.
Image
But I'll take it.

The rack wood looks great! I helped my son pick up a unit of cedar fence boards at his work a couple of days ago. While we were there, he told me they were giving away a bunch of 2x2 white oak boards. All we could take. Had my car trailer and loaded it up. Left a lot behind, but we put a big dent in it. There was also a lot of mahogany as well. Looks like another wood project for me in the near future.

Your project still has me thinking of working on my BH...

That's great, free wood! I tell you what, the oak is not cheap. Just 88 feet of 1x4 was over $200. You could join those 2 by's to make the 1x4 with some biscuits and glue. That's my cheap side talking.

After letting the 1x4's lay out for a while, I noticed one board has a pretty good curve to it. I really don't want to replace it so I'm trying something.
Image
My wife was looking at me funny as I walked out with the iron, my only instructions were to not wax the skis with it. And I'm not waxing skis. The steam function is pouring the water to this board, and I see it working.
Image
I flipped it over a few times with spacers putting reverse pressure on it, and it worked in about 20 minutes. I think it's useable, and I will keep an eye on it after keeping pressure on it over night.
Image
Can't really go too far without the hardware, because the holes in the hardware decide where to drill. Got this nice set from Greg Lampman of San Luis Obispo.

I received the top bows from a member on G503. Had to check the fit, looks good.
Image
The angle is just right.
Image
For hardware, the nuts are all square, so I picked up an 8 point socket for 1/4-20 square nuts.
Image
With everything finally in hand, it's time to start cutting and drilling. I figure this thing needs to be built on the trailer to make sure it fits, and will go on and off. First were the stakes.
ImageI
I drilled the top of the stakes for the bow pockets, while I could still put them in the drill press. The stakes also get a counter sunk hole for the top slat bolt, also in the drill press. Then I played with the spacing of the slats.
Image
Once settled on the spacing, I made spacers for assembly, and a drilling template, both from oak. Then cut each numbered slat to length, clamped, drilled, and temporarily bolted, making sure the stakes stayed centered in the pockets, square and plumb.
Image
The top slat gets a 3/4" radius for the tarp to rest on, and here is the mock up of the top slat, bow pocket, bow bracket and bow.
Image
The right side is done, on to the left.
Image
Both sides done. I like it, but there is a long way to go.
Image
The look of the oak is great, but I think I'm going to paint it.

Had a chance to prime hardware while the sun was out. The painting of anything has become a problem with winter in full fledge.
Image
For the OD, I rigged up a hanger so I could spray outside, then quickly move the whole thing into the garage for drying under the heater.
Image
After numbering and disassembling everything, I mixed up a 50/50 compound of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Brushed it on each side of all wood pieces. It leaves a beautiful finish, that would be quite presentable.
Image
This is everything but the slats for the end racks.
Image
The numbering system has gone from blue tape to sharpie (under an area that will not show). Once I paint, that is not going to work. Have to think about that one.
Image
Moved it all in to the drying station, that is now running 24/7. Hopefully it won't stink up the house any worse than the canvas.

I think just the early trailers have the handle at the front. I have only seen a few others. Here's one very close to mine.
Interesting. To me it seems having it up front would be handier while unhitching the trailer. One could grab the handle more easier than run to the rear if it was on an incline. Obviously, there must have been some reason it was moved to the rear in later versions.
Saw this the other day, maybe the reason to move the handle to the rear was less cable, less slop in the linkage, less material.

By all accounts, (thanks Dave), there are no markings on the original bolts. Since I was not able to find blank carriage bolts, one more chore: sand 128 bolts, from 1-1/4" up to 2-1/2". I also painted them along with the washers and square nuts.
Image
Started assembly of the end racks. This was much easier, inside, on the table. Just making sure of the spacing, squareness, parallel, and numbered order.
Image
This went really well, the only thing I couldn't do was the latches, that will have to be done on the trailer, to match up with the other half, and no point now anyway because it all has to paint first.
Image
It was the kind of day you get every tool out.

Thanks for the kind words. Once I decided this needs to go to the Plymouth meet (in 4 weeks) I have had to step it up and work in less than ideal weather, but I think I'll make it. Probably won't be licensed, but oh well.

I see you're staying hydrated as well...good call! :P

Seriously, great work! I'm envious of the space you have to work and will have to get creative when I tackle removing my M10 tub for the repaint.

The way I see it, I have this hobby for relaxation. And a few beers, listening to a game, Saturday afternoon, that makes it. If it goes well, I have something to show for it. I also have to get creative at times for workspace, especially during winter. This winter I also had my jeep torn apart until recently, so the trailer rarely got inside until recently.

Artistic photo of the day:
Image
Started looking at the hardware. I think it needs to be numbered as well. The mating pieces are dedicated to each other.
Image
So I stamped them with 3/8" hand stamps, on the inner surface that won't show.
Image
Which gave me the idea to leave an inspector's stamp and date. Hey, I have to leave my mark somewhere.
