Kelsey Hayes Wheel Width

Post by Rick E. » Fri Mar 08, 2019 5:02 am

As my restoration progresses, I recently dismounted the Armstrong tires that were mounted on the 1951 M38. I was pleased and disappointed to find that the wheels are period and manufacturer correct being Kelsey Hayes and manufactured in 1952 and 1956 BUT they are 5 inch wide. My question is: Will there be an issue running 7.00 by 16 NDCC tires on the wheels? The bead is just a bit wider and the wheels do look like originals. I was hoping to save some money since I had the rims already but I would not be opposed to finding a set of originals in the NW if reasonably priced. Thanks

I have 5 " rims on my m38. It came with them on it. They do rub on the frame a little. But I have nothing to compare it to.

All M-38/M-38A1 and M-100 Trailers share the 801462 16-4.50 wheels. MB Combat Wheels were also 16-4.50. The WO-801762 M-38/M-38A1 Wheel superceded the Combat Wheel as noted in the 1951 dated SNL for MB/GPW.
Your 16-5" wheels may be from the 40's thru 1962 4WD Truck or Wagon.

All M-38/M-38A1 and M-100 vehicles use the same part number wheels. There is reference to "late" M-38A1 wheels, they have a very small crease concentric to the wheel, they are the same 801462 Part No..
