Gloss 24087 Paint
Yes, I need full gloss, 24087 paint. Where can I get it?
Why, you ask? I am planning to restore an M606 like the ones the ROK Army Officers had when I was there. They were fully gloss painted, 24087.
Any ideas short of having the local PPG place make me some, which they will do, at at least $300 a gallon.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
14087 is full gloss just like 50's-60's Staff Cars and Commercial model vehicles used. It is Dark O.D.

My question is; "Where can I get it?" Having the code doesn't help; I want a source.

Consult your MV Parts supplier. I may even have an extragallon of 40 year old GI Issue that I kept in case I needed it.

Try this outfit and this product https://www.topsecretcoatings.com/produ ... 6963352199
They did the paint for the PBR as per the FS 595 spec (24052). It took a phone call or two, but they did do a custom mix at the time (seems to me that they were near Tacoma WA back then). The TS4 is a very durable Marine Grade enamel.

Before I bought Gov't Spec paint from the Gov't ContractorsI used to get this color done in Enamel by local PPG and Dupont Paint dealers using the Gov't color code.
It's been a while.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
As I said in my post, I can get it mixed at my local PPG shop; but they charge more than the $35 a gallon that Gillespie charges.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
Have you talked to Gillespie? I would start there. They may be willing to mix some for you, and if not could direct you to compatible products to mix to their semi-gloss. Typically the sheen is dependent on the ratio of pigment to binder. More binder, less pigment for more sheen. I believe GCI is a synthetic enamel product, find a compatible gloss clear and mix with the semi-gloss and you should get the result you're looking for. Thinning with a "hot" or also referred to as "slow" reducer will also bring out more gloss, but will significantly increase the paints tendency to run. If all that's too much go to your local paint store with a color sample and they should be able to mix it for you, just ask for their "shop line" single stage paint, that will be much cheaper than PPG. It won't be $35/gal but should be less than $100/gal.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
Back in the 60's I had my PPG Automotive Paint supplier make up 14087 (Gloss O.D.) enamal using the 24087 (Semi Gloss) formula and omitting the "flatening agent" It amounted to less tnan 1/2" paint quantity in the can. Did the same with DuPont.

Yes I have had my local paint store mix paint for me; I am trying to avoid paying so much. I want to pay the same as for the semi gloss. $35 a gallon. Might not happen.

The mixing cost at your local store may be less than the haz mat fee you usually have to pay to get paint shipped to you from a non local supplier.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
It's ridiculous how this Haz Mat fee thing has burdened our hobby due to the sheer lack of determined research by the vendors. I have ordered paint online for years from various sources (outside of our hobby) with no Haz Mat fees associated. Ron Fitzpatrick does not charge a Haz Mat fee. He did his research. I ship CANVAK through UPS with no Haz Mat fee. I too did my research during a dispute with the local UPS terminal management. The UPS Transportation Safety people took my side and told the local terminal to stand down during a three way phone call where I quoted their policy as related to 49CFR. In the instance of our hobby, paint and canvas preservatives are considered Consumer Commodities in the small quantities that we ship in. 49CFR and the shippers allow this exception for Consumer Goods. Under the law, and in these instances, we are speaking of Combustible Liquids that meet an exception due to a threshold of Flashpoint and Quantity. 49CFR further allows the shipper to Reclassify ORM-D (Other Restricted Materials-Domestic) materials based on an honest and accurate assessment of the Manufacturers Reactivity Label. Under this Reclassification, as long as Quantity Exceptions and Packaging Requirements are met, these Reclassified ORM-D Items can ship Ground with No ORM-D Markings and No Declaration. As long as these items are correctly Reclassified, and properly packaged, there is NO Haz Mat Declaration or fee required. If you've ever noticed those extra clips or the plastic locking band around a gallon can of paint and thought what a nuisance those things are; those are a component of Proper Packaging under 49CFR. Four gallons of enamel paint, properly sealed in a box that meets the 49CFR 200 lb crush requirement need not bear a Haz Mat fee.

Re: Gloss 24087 Paint
All true; I have noticed that there are no more haz mat fees on the 4 gallon boxes of paint, nor on spray cans, through UPS at least. If a vendor charges that, it might be for the special box.
