Halftrack oil

Post by wreckerman » Fri Jul 13, 2012 11:20 pm

Hello group

What do other halftrack owners suggest using for an engine oil?

I tried a word search but I don't seem to have much luck with the G503 search engine.

Thanks

Dan

Shell Rotella T Triple Protection, 15W-40 Part# 550023277.

It has the zink in it, and its tech department bulletin recommends it for 1990 and older equipment with older style cam shafts.

A lot of guys use it in the G503 jeeps too. I have used it for about 10 years in my MVs. It is reasonably priced too, and available at most truck and auto parts suppliers locally.

I use the synthetic version in my 1967 John Deere 2020 for pushing snow in winter.

Hello group

Thank you for your input.

A research shows Shell Rotella available as Rotella T Triple, Rotella T1 and Rotella T3 .

Rotella T Triple and Rotella T3 sounds like the same thing but the container label coloring is different.

Which one do you like?

Dan

We need to keep track of this as the ZDDP levels are dropping (DPF filters and CAT's) in the Diesel oils (label change?). They "WILL NOT" tell you it has been lowered but one of the ratings may "disappear" or it may say "Meets the new" standard. In time, I think the "not street legal" motor oils will be the only ones available that has an adequate level of ZDDP to protect these old engines.

You can also add a Zinc additive to the Rotella Oil you can buy it almost anywhere as an attive for braking in a new engine rebuild.

I apologize for my confusion but like wreckerman I am not certain which Rotella oil is the "Shell Rotella T Triple Protection, 15W-40 Part# 550023277" mentioned above as I can't find an oil with that part number or exact name.

Neither of the below 2 oils show the part number listed above on the website and an internet search of that part number does not help.

Shell Rotella® T4 Triple Protection Diesel Oil - proven legacy of performance and is suitable for a wide range of heavy duty engine applications. It’s an excellent choice for:
On-highway fleets, general haul, construction
Agriculture, public-transport operators
Diesel pickup trucks, including high-power vehicles requiring resistance to increased heat and stress

Shell Rotella® T3 Fleet - heavy duty engine oil formulated to protect against engine wear, deposits and oil breakdown. T3 Fleet helps provide reliable protection and performance in fleet and off-highway equipment, offering the convenience of a single oil suitable for a wide range of vehicle manufacturers. Shell Rotella® T3 is also designed to:
Demonstrate resistance to breakdown under high temperatures
Improve oxidation protection
Improve resistance to oil breakdown under extreme high temperature conditions versus prior CJ-4 performance specification.

It looks like the smallest container that T3 comes in is a 5 gallon bucket.

Thanks very much.

Dittos.
I use straight Rotella 30w along with a zinc additive in my older engines.
Cheap insurance.
