B-36 video

Post by Wolfman » Sat Jan 19, 2019 6:35 am

Just received this one. A video about what it took to get a B-36 in the air. Called "6 turning. 4 burning" with Jimmy Stewart.
Enjoy !

With Col Potter as Flight Engineer. The were a daily sight back in 50's. It's more impresive without the music.

I caught Col. Potter ( Harry Morgan ) in the back up roll. A bit younger than when he was on M.A.S.H.
The inspirational music was too much Hollywood but if you turned the volume down, you couldn't hear the roar of the engines.
Thing that caught my eye, when they went to take off power, the whole aircraft was shaking like a bowl of Jello !

The pilots used to thrill guest passengers by alternating the ailerons which caused the forward fuselage to rock independent of the rear fuselage. 24 hour flights were the norm.

That brings two things to mind.
"Sick sac" for packs and 24 hr. flights correlates with "relief tube".

The span of the B-36 Horizontal Stabilizer is 99 ft., 3 ft. shorter than a B-17 Wingspan.
