Hi Steve,
I would believe it to be circa 1950's as it is similar to the open ended spanners found in dated tool rolls which bare the forged 'Fairmount' as opposed to the stamped wartime marking.

Definitely a hard to find wrench in the correct size whatever the marking.
Thanks, Cliff, for the quick and definitive feedback. Kinda what I was anticipating when I saw your stamped examples above.

Steve

Cliff I thought you might like to see these ?

FAIRALLOY 9727 SPEC ' AA ' describes this one as a contract special - so my guess is that it might not be listed in period catalogues ?
FAIRALLOY 9725 B
FAIRALLOY 9723

So for comparison I have added the post WW2 FAIRMOUNT USA 5/8'' X 3/4''. I agree that the raised font is similar to the raised font on the nine piece DOE wrench set which I have in a NOS W-51-41-W-982-20 marked canvas roll.

Thanks Len for posting about your fine sets and the info about the "special" Fairmount. So there's now at least three in the UK except my example does not have "Fairalloy" stamped on the reverse. Looks like the special has been stamped with the description whereas the other two have been forged in, again suggesting it was manufactured outside those normally available. Did you just happen to have them lying around or have you been specifically collecting for a GMTK?

Cliff glad you liked them, I have been collecting for a long time now. You know how it starts ? Buy a jeep - buy some tools - then another jeep - then a trailer - then even more tools - fast forward several decades - start a GMTS - then another - the slippery slope - then too many tools

Digging through my Armstrong's I came upon this one marked ' 15176 ' instead of the usual ' 9723 ', but both have the the same opening sizes :o

The ' 15176 ' is marked ' Chrome-Vanadium ', and the ' 9723 ' is marked ' Hi-Tensile ' ? So if the numbers signify the wrench size why the difference between two identical wrenches ? Or perhaps it is something else ?

Throw into the mix this one ' 15314 ' which is a 1/4 Whit. X 5/16 Whit. marked ' Chromium-Vanadium ', obviously with different opening sizes so not GMTS correct but the number sequence is sort of similar to ' 15176 '. Are Whitworth pieces like this one listed in American catalogues ?

So my best guess is that the ' 15176 ' and the ' 15314 ' were only for export to supply Commonwealth Forces using a different numbering system ? Both of which were U.K. finds.

Thoughts anyone please ?
Thanks Len

Found some interesting DBEs today. I know the Jos Shaw is not GMTK but it's only the second I've ever seen. I believe the Herbrand is early or just prior to the war.

Jos Shaw 9/32 x 1/4
TruFit 5001 3/8 x 7/16
Duro (Circle-X) 9/16 x 1/2
Herbrand 4925 1/2 x 9/16

One theory is that "Hi-Tensile" is Armstrong's version of Herbrand's AISI numbers - a way of indicating compliance with WPB alloy restrictions. It works from a timing perspective (in the sense that it is mainly found on wartime era tools), but I believe there have been some anomalies with it as well, and, all steel has a tensile strength, and steels that would not be in compliance certainly don't have low tensile strength, so I am not fully bought into this theory.

It's funny how things show up sometimes. I found these two (Bonney 2804 & Herbrand 4723) identical sized stubby DBEs together yesterday. The date codes on the Bonney are pretty worn but appear to be AW - January 1945.

Those are some nice ones, Bill. I think I have the small and medium size Herbrand. Just missing the 3/4 x 5/8. Not even sure they made it though.

Adding these four to the mix

15 degree short types with the ' CI ' forge marks, and 45 degree offset short types. The 5/8'' X 11/16'' example has only a ' 5 ' forge mark.

The 1941 catalogue only lists three sizes for both styles of 3/8'' X 7/16'' - 1/2'' X 9/16'' - 5/8'' X 11/16''. As for any other sizes who knows :?:

It doesn’t seem that S-K has been mentioned in this discussion. Although I don’t believe that any 5/8” x 3/4” size wrenches have been found, there are three sizes listed in the wartime 1943 catalog. Here are mine. I just received the 5/8” x 11/16 wrench yesterday.
