Willys Factory MB-T Tarpaulin

Post by Farrell Fox » Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:02 pm

I made this based on the Willys factory drawings. The canvas is #8 from the war time mill, the binding is my own custom reproduction binding. The rope is the correct cotton rope cut to specified length, and the grommets are NOS from Willys Overland.

I've never seen a Willys tarp in person, but I discovered a few things while making this. One being that there are 10 ropes, as opposed to 14, and the corner ropes are looped into two grommets. The other is that Willys seems to be the only one who added binding tape to the edges. Seems sort of redundant, and adds a considerable amount of extra labor, but that's how they made it.

Beautiful job! Would this style have been used for a 1942 MB-T? Will you be making them for others? Thanks Eric

As far as I can tell, this is how the tarps looked from beginning to end of MB-T production. The earliest date I can read on the drawings is 5-27-1942. I plan to make more after I get a bunch of tops made.

That looks like a great job Farrell.

Where did you get the ring fasteners?

The ropes have wire securing the ends for now. I ordered the tool and rings, but they haven't arrived yet. Today was our only day of no rain, so I didn't wait for the rings to take the photos.

What did the Bantam ones look like? Farrell, is the edging oilcloth? Lots of WWII AAF pieces had oil cloth edging.

The Bantam covers look the same except they have larger corner gussets, and lack any binding tape on the edge. The binding tape on the cover, and on Willys canvas in general, is leatherette.
