I added the controls for the Woodland Scenics lighting system over the long weekend and wired up my first small depots to lighting.
The first was directly over the panel, the other a few feet away. The latter I was looking forward to, as I'd put a basic interior inside the structure and kept the door open when I built it. It'll be great for people to be able to peek in there and see furniture (and a 1943 calendar on the wall):

I need to do a long-exposure version of this eventually:

I got the gas station wired up for lights with the Woodland Scenics lighting system. I especially love it because it has a centralized control panel and dimmer switches for each structure.
I took these shots with a long exposure on a tripod, illuminated with "moonlight" from waving my cell phone screen overhead.

I just added lights to the farm house at Sadie as well, I just need to work on an interior in that house now, even though visitors will likely never see it from the angle from which they'd view the house:

My layout is featured in O Gauge Railroading's newest issue, # 304, coming soon to or current at a hobby shop (and several Wal-Marts) near you!

I added some WW2-era speed limit and Victory Garden signs to the layout:

I also took a 1/43 scale Chevy 1941 pickup truck model and modified it to better look right for the timeframe. I painted over the whitewalls, dulled down the finish, added period-correct license plate and even a scale gas ration sticker to the windshield. I really like how it turned out.

Note the license plate, even has the right county code for it:

Thanks!
Last night, I decided that a pathway on the layout didn’t look right at all to me. I’d sprinkled Stoney Creek soil over the top of existing scenery and it looked like something was spilled, not a walkway:
Image
So, I scraped the pathway down with a caulking knife, put down the dirt and then added ground foam to the sides to make it look recessed into the earth the way a path really does. It looks better now:
Image
Then, I covered over a turnout to hide the HO scale ties (nobody makes a curved one in On30 gauge). I think it looks much better now as well:

Here we go with another before-and-after challenge.

The car came from a model train show over the weekend (the only thing I bought there). It's a Rextoys 1935 Ford, which usually retails from $40-60 and I got it for only $11!

Yesterday, I took it apart, removed all the window glass and cut out a spot where the driver window would have been rolled down, removed the pre-war unit markings from the door, dulled the finish, highlighted the perforations around the engine compartment, added a driver, repainted the interior to include gauges, gave it some very light weathering, and I think it looks very much improved from its original version. Now, I need to put some historically correct military license plates on it (I just found a good image of the right government plates for a vehicle of this type), and it'll be ready to go.

I found a good 1942 government tag online, printed out copies in O scale and placed to each end.

Lee, thank you very much for this video. I cannot decide if your modeling skills or photographic ability outweigh one another. Then throw in your choice of music. I rise from my chair and salute you. You have captured sadness, gladness and in my opinion hope for better days. Excellent work.
