Tim's Project G518

Post by timsresort » Sun Dec 16, 2018 11:15 am

So I'm sitting in the bleachers at my son's high school ski race and I notice a local plumbing contractor pull in the parking lot with a Ben Hur trailer in tow, full of construction debris. Sure enough, he sits down near me, and of course I say "nice Ben Hur", to which he replies, "what's that?, oh, that piece of crap?" And that's how it started.
Image
Fast forward a few days, make a smoking deal, drag it to my brothers place to keep, you know, everyone happy. It is, as my black lab would say, "ruff!"
Image
There is about a 6 inch belly in the bed. Must have hauled rocks at some point. No tailgate, no lunette or casting, no landing wheel, no title.
Image
Fenders are o.k., custom tail light lens and tailgate latch by Bubba.
Image
The bed is just hashed.
Image
Mismatched wheels, one is not CCKW.
So this is my project, I have been working on it, and there is a lot more to come, believe me.

Tim,

Nicely done! I'm always amazed when you find WW2 equipment not only "in the wild" but still operating! I once saw a plumber truck with two B-17 oxygen tanks in the back as portable compressed air tanks. Unfortunately I wasn't able to chase the guy down and strike up a deal. What is it with plumbers and WW2 stuff anyway?

Thanks for the ID on that one, I knew it isn't CCKW, but not that it is M35.

Next, got a wild hair and thought I would try looking for markings. Pretty quickly uncovered markings, probably not military.

At least I have a name for it now, moving forward we will refer to Mr. Hur as "Killer".

Tim, I mean to offer only the highest respects and fun. Your trailer really looks like a great save. I (may) have a line on a tailgate for you, gotta talk a bit more to my buddy. - Love the logo under the paint, it just adds to the coolness of the trailer and the entire story...........

Thanks to those that helped me find a lunette and casting. Made the trip to Gridley and got quite the tour.

Hold the phone, found another decent trailer.

The price was right, so what the heck.

Loaded it up at the meet, appears to be early. No data plate.

Trailers just be flyin' at you Tim!! I have always been curious about the pintle/lunette system on the fuel trailers and how they were mounted. Even though the B.H. trailers didn't have them, (that I know of), it would be pretty cool to have multiple trailers under tow in tandem.

The Jimmy in the fore ground is pulling two fuel trailers, the one in the back ground is pulling what appears to be 1 fuel and 1 water trailer.

Trailers do seem to follow me home. I did the tandem hitch set up on my M416 for 2 reasons, if you need to pull someone on the trail, or someone can pull me back if needed. This is mostly for heavy duty stuff like the Rubicon. It could be done for a BH with a little fabrication skill. I always thought it would be fun to have a tandem back up contest at a meet. You would only need about 10 feet, because that's how far you get. Great photo BTW.

Looking the latest trailer over:
Image
The good: complete lunette, landing wheel and casting. Even trailer chains.
Image
The bad: rusted through tailgate, but at least it's there.
Image
The ugly: rough front panel.
Image
USA number readable, that's also good. 010635 puts it about 1600 from the beginning, from CCKW.org.
G518 USA numbers by Manufacture
009031-014238
Lavine Gear (may be Ben-Hur Mfg. Co.)
Very interesting. An early Lavine Gear.
