Jerry cans WW2

Post by schussy » Thu Dec 06, 2018 1:21 am

I recently purchased a German WW2 jerry can,but it has not been embossed with WEHRMACHT down the bottom.
Does that indicate, that it has not been supplied to the Wehrmacht ?
I do own a 1942 German can with Wehrmacht embossed down the bottom.
Thanks for helping.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the reply.
I wanted to upload a picture, but you need a hosting service.Confused.
Anyhow, I can assure you, there is no WEHRMACHT embossment on it.
Just the maker's name SCHWELM,within triangle, date and 3 digit number.
Regards, Schussy

I have a 1939 dated Schwelm and a 1944 dated 'fcx' (which is also Schwelm I believe) without 'Wehrmacht'.

Yes there were some companies that didnt stamp “Wehrmacht” on batches. And some did not alway put batch numbers on either. “Sandrik” never dated any.

Schussy,
As we are still learning about the many nuances of the jerry can, a few details about your can are generally agreed upon. The cans with Schwelm are in fact made by the Schwelmer Eisenwerk Muller und Co. The word Schwelm relates to town of where the production plant resides (pg 66, Leger) Additionally in the book, no Muller cans are shown with Wehrmacht stamped on them, although HEER is painted on some. A quick look thru my humble collection, I found none that have Wehrmacht markings. Also note that the 'batch' number is not universally applied. FCX is the late war code.
If you have not acquired a copy of the Leger books on Jerry cans, I would highly recommend it. The photographs alone are great and the text will add to your understanding of the subject. There are a few minor inaccuracies and a point or two of contention amongst collectors, but a great piece of work on the authors part.
Cheers,
Rick
