PE-95-K flywheel tooth count

Post by Bart1015 » Tue Dec 04, 2018 7:10 am

Hello all,

I am doing maintenance and replacing some minor wiring on my PE-95-k. My unit has 16 total hours on it and the engine is a RMC unit. I am assuming the engine is a normal M38 and it has all the normal M38 shielded and waterproof ignition ect.

I have found that the factory starting system has a few down sides. When the battery is not fully charged, or its starting to loose its cranking amps then the unit will not turn enough to start. When this happens, I simply use my truck to "jump start it". I made an adapter that plugs into the 12 volt external plug to my truck winch plug. When its plugged into my truck it spins great and will start right away.

What I would like to do is install a starter. The flywheel already has the ring gear installed and it looks like it would not be very difficult to make it work. I am thinking of a stand alone starting system. I could switch the genset to "manual start", then kick on the starting motor. This would be nice because I could leave the original system intact.

Am I missing any unforeseen issues with using a starting motor as described? Also, does anyone happen to know how many teeth are on the ring gear? I am hoping I will not have to count them.

Thanks for your help

I had a P-95-K, factory equipped 6-volt waterproof system and it had the 124 tooth ring gear. You will need an MZ-4163 starter, (Henry J)type with solenoid mounted on the starter for button or key start. The CJ-3A overrunning clutch type starters will work, but you will need to make a manual push type system to engage the overrunning clutch mechanism to spin the starter motor. FYI, those Henry J MZ-4163 starters are hard to find.

Thanks for the info.

I may just end up getting 2 very good 6 volt batteries to use the generator to start it.

I have it running very well now. I live out in the country and my home is wired for a backup generator. We lose power about 2 times per month during the rainy season. Today I temporarily wired my PE-95 it into my house and it ran everything great. I am a bit concerned with the fuel consumption but it will work great for now.

I think in the long run I will just buy a nice propane/natural gas unit for the house. This military unit is just fun to have.

Count them only take a few minutes, you dont know what the lat guy might of installed. measure the tooth height, 97 tooth is 5/8, 124 tooth 3/4. There are small aftermarket starters that will bolt up too if you know the tooth count. Or just put a big 12 volt battery in there and be done with it.

Adam,

Thanks for the hight measurement, that will help.

I am going to bring the battery tray to my local vehicle battery dealer and see what the biggest, most cranking amp battery will fit. If it does not brake the bank ill buy it.

My genset starts with a normal 12 volt car battery, its actually the 4 year old battery from my ram. If I dont use the genset I just run her for a little each month. Make sure the cables and ends are good and you wont have an issue. You said rainy season so its probably warm enough to run on plain 30nd. Mine starts at 10 degrees F with no issues using the genset to crank her. Oil is just thinner for winter use.

Hmmm.

124 tooth count 3/4" high corresponds to an early M38 flywheel (641995) that uses a 24 V starter MPB 4301UT.

97 tooth count is for MB using 6v starter MZ4114 or MZ4124 for 12 V.

I wonder if different tooth count flywheels ended up on the gensets as the tooth count didn't matter due to using the generator as the starter?

I just picked up the engine for one of these to use in an MB restoration. I'll need to count teeth to before installing into the Jeep.

EDIT: Reading again you have a RMC engine so it is likely equipped with the 124 tooth M38 flywheel. You will need to change to the 97 tooth and find the 12V starter that works with it.

Looking into it more it gets muddier. There are two types of M38 blocks. starter mounts are different. i think from what you said new batteries is the way to go, Keep it as designed. The starter thing could send you women a rabbit hole, I worry.
