Pound for pound

I have been told by a couple of different people that mules are pound for pound, the most expensive military vehicle to restore...……….you think so, try an m35a2 deuce and a half. GEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Given you can get an M35 for less than 10K to start with, I'd say not likely. My guess would be M3 scout car or M8 Greyhound. Hell, you could buy 3 or 4 m35's and piece them together to make one good one long before you bought an M3 or Greyhound.

Point taken, yes you can get a decent deuce for 4K. But that's just where it starts, tires $400 each and there's 10 not 4, injector pump $1600, two batteries, Alternator $800 and on and on. I have 3 mules and have had to replace a lot of parts, th

ey are easier to get and a lot less expensive. Now on the other hand I love my deuce and have just as much fun with it as I do with my mules!! I can even haul them with it!!

Don't get me wrong. They are not CHEAP, no MV is. But.... most expensive pound for pound? Not even close. M3 scout cars are running 60-70K (fully restored) about the same for the M8's. Hell even a half track will run you 40K restored. And we all know that buying the parts yourself and restoring it usually costs MORE than buying it restored.

Simple solution. Amount spent divided by weight of vehicle. Lets see them.

I think what most people mean by saying pound for pound a mule is the most expensive:
Say average mule restored $10,000/870lbs = $11.49/lb. A restored deuce, even at $20,000/13,000lbs = $1.53/lb.
It's all about the price per pound. If you had the equivalent weight as one deuce in mules, the cost would equal almost 15 mules or $150,000...

I look at it another way, my mule is pound for pound the most fun of any military vehicle as I run mine at least one day a week doing chores at my railroad museum I volunteer at. :D

Agreed, fun is where its at.
Now, having said that, why did the military ever decide to do away with the mule? I can't see how it was ever decided that these great machines were redundant.

Pound for pound they're both a ton of fun. How something so simple as the mule can be so fun.

Every once and awhile someone will come up to me and talk about mules, and their military service. Always time well spent.
