Question on Condenser

Post by dpcd67 » Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:43 am

Will an M38 condenser work on a Dodge M37? Are condensers voltage specific? Or does one size work in everything.

They should be the same. The voltages are the same between the two, M37 and M38.

The condenser acts like a fake ground for when the points are open. That way the power can build up for when the points close and fires to the plug.

Ok, so they are voltage specific? I have replaced lots of condensers over the years, but just bought the ones listed for whatever vehicle I was working on. But now I want to learn about them.

Condensers re rated in microfarad [μF] & that is important consideration.
They are not voltage specific.
Bosch VW beetle condensers work well for Jeep rather than Asian repros that are apparently more bad than good.

Understand how system parts interact with one another. GOOD parts can then be established & the NOT GOOD problem/s part/s isolated for repair or replacement.

The Condenser for the M-38/M-38A1,MB/GPW with IAD 4008 Dist are the same AutoLite/Willys Part No.
Same for Points. They are not Voltage Specific. 6-12-24 Volts, Same parts.
I prefer GI Issue AutoLite/Prestolite OEM or Filko.

This is one of my favorite PS Mags. Starting on P3 it explains for the basic GI how the distributor works.

Thanks to all; now I still need an answer to this question; will a condenser from an M38 work in an M37?
Because I have M38 ones and need one for my M37 and if it will work, then I won't have to order one.
Microfarads? That is a new term for me.

I love PS magazine; but the racy stuff would never be allowed now. Once when I was BMO in the 2-70 Armor, we had a team of 2 PS Mag writers stay with us for a week to try to get ideas for articles. They got one idea on end connectors; that was it. Pretty much a wasted week for everyone involved.
