Made numerous trips, sitting in the back of a Huey with my feet hanging out the door. Don't remember anyone smoking. At least not a cigarette. But, never rode up front either, and I will admit, I had other things on my mind at the moment.
One hand on the Collective. One hand on the Joystick. Wonder how you managed a smoke ?? Just thinking on-line.
Maybe on the ground between Sorties ??
Or maybe for the CO while on tour of the current AO ??
And could have been a request by the war department, just in the case of the last event mentioned.
And just for the record, sitting on your helmet didn't work.
I would still suggest holding off on patching the hole.

Under the edge of the dash, left one is closed (above the "BELL" tail rotor pedal, right one near center bottom lip of console (above the collective) appears to be open.
This is different from the one I remember seeing (later model maybe?), my Brother pulled one out of a range hulk that was rectangular and inserted into a slot like a pull out parts drawer bin from my memory. Clearly the tang to stuff out the butt is seen on the right ashtray that's open. Many other shots of more modern UH-1's don't have these added in.
Bet that added to the contract specs, what's a replacement ashtray for a UH-1 that was damaged in a fire fight cost in '68-72 or such? Now to look at PS Magazines for a replacement part number

Easy enough...Set the collective and trim the AC for your level flight profile. Apply friction to the collective. Left hand to the cyclic. Right hand to the sleeve pocket to retrieve the pack. Shake one loose and place it in position. Put the pack back. Still holding the cyclic with your left hand thumb and forefinger, reach in your side pocket and retrieve your Zippo. After getting the smoke started, return the Zippo to its pocket. Change hands again and enjoy your smoke.

They were simply included as a convenience. All controls were built up to prevent something like a tool getting in the way.

H3 Sea King (or the CH124 Canadian variant we are retiring at end of November after 58 years in service) still have ashtrays at the pilot, copilot, TACCO and AESOP stations.
During My first deployment overseas as a Lt TACCO with some old school pilots up front,I heard the ICS call” disregard smoke in cockpit” prior to the pilots lighting cigarettes and cigars.
I always used my ashtray as a pencil holder.

There's a picture somewhere here on the G of a G503 in Korea with a cigarette lighter in the dash, and IIRC, an ashtray (Edit: Wrong). IIRC, a General was sitting in it (Edit: Wrong) . It's what made me decide to keep the cigar lighter hole in my dash and use it for a power port for the CB and phone charger.

Great view of the dual wiper setup. Good pic for locating position of the vacuum tube hose clips. Looks like the driver side wiper was on when the jeep was turned off for it is not back in its park position. The passenger side looks to be in its park position. The engine is off by the looks of the gas gauge and oil pressure gauge.

Great walk through on the proper way to "fire one up" inflight, S.C.
Cyclic. Proper term for a joy stick.
I knew that. My fixed wing lingo slipping through. I own a tail dragger.
Always wanted to fly a helicopter. Just never got around to it.
But I have flown a Gyrocopter. Did not have a collective. Cyclic has a center and life is better when you find it and stay close ! You know what I mean !!

My Australian JEEP had that exact same modification. You pulled it out and downwards , and behold ,,, there was an ashtray.
Would be fun trying to ash your fag at 35MPH in a windy JEEP.

No I don't have a pic of the dash before resto but I think I still have the ashtray in the parts bin. I will check early in the week and get back to you , hopefully with a pic of the ashtray.
