Re: Numbers Matching '43 GPW Value Needed
I will do some work and see if I can get to the frame rail and see if it is stamped or something. I have been trying to get a hold of my uncle that owned it before my dad did but haven't had much luck so far. I know my dad wouldn't have gone through all of the work with the DMV to get different tags and what not. He looked at vehicles as a tool to get him back and forth to work. Didn't care much about all the numbers and that stuff.

All that matters at this point is what is stamped under that glued on state tag. And they all were hand stamped there from the factory, to match the engines with already had a number. You need that to verify matching frame and engine, or not. It will take a wire brush to clean it off so you can read it.

Re: Numbers Matching '43 GPW Value Needed
Interesting read. I've gone thru both of the discussions on this jeep. It really would be of note to those around here if you can get at and verify that rail stamping under the DMV tag. We just don't see matching GPW numbers very often.
It definitely looks to be a restorable project. The buyer will be most interested in noting any significant rust damage, especially in the undercarriage/frame since your dad used this as a daily driver there in Oregon
Asking price range from $3-$4.5k sounds to be reasonable, and you obviously would like to get the best price you can , but without giving it away too low keep in mind that this looks to be an $8-$12k full restoration project for the buyer to complete, depending on what the buyer can do themself vs outsourcing.
Two motorpool GPW restos behind me, so not looking for another (any type) myself , but it should be a satisfying project for someone with the time, money, facility, and talent to take on. I'd love to be a birdy on the shoulder to watch as this is transformed, and certainly hope whoever buys it will update these forums with the progress.
Grab that frame number, and let's watch it happen!

Re: Numbers Matching '43 GPW Value Needed
So are you guys saying that I should pull that tag off the frame and wire brush it down to find the serial number?
I appreciate all the help on this. I am really wanting to sell it to somebody who can restore it back to original. I am thinking my tastes lean more toward the CJ's that you can do mods on, not ruin a piece of history.
And not to try for any pity out there, but we just found out last week that my uncle, who my dad bought the jeep from, is in the hospital dying of cancer. I was hoping to get a chance to talk to him to find a bit more history but it doesn't look like that will happen. Maybe that's why he didn't reply to my facebook friend request.

Re: Numbers Matching '43 GPW Value Needed
The frame number stamped on the left front frame rail, glove box data plate, and motor block number should all match from the factory. The only GPWs to have body numbers would be ACM produced bodies from late 43 to early 44 onward and this number NEVER matches the other 3 numbers. Ford tubs up to late 43 have no body numbers.

Did you remove the tag and find the frame number yet?
