Not surprising, this has been coming for sometime. I heard from a number of sources that the garrison commander hated the event and was looking for reasons to shut it down.

We "lost" the Gap under similar circumstances in the 1980s. We went to Ft. Meade Md. and Ft Dix NJ for a few years until regime change brought in a new Post Commander, and we were welcomed back warmly. I doubt either is a viable option as NSA pretty much has Meade, and Dix is now in a communist satellite state, which makes NFA weapons very hard to transport there. That said, as to point One, Membership in CMP should suffice for certification of weapons training, as would any prior military service, or NRA weapons safety course. As to the leadership requirement, this is actually neither enforceable nor realistic. Point Three, however, IS one i would consider a sticking point, and would recommend an accountability check of the items: List sims & their owners, and then ensure any "duds" are removed from the field, and account for all reenactment ordnance both before and after the tactical. Not that hard really. But, in any case it will probably be a few years before the latest martinet goes on to another post...

I have a feeling more Militray bases will follow the GAP's lead. . Even Civil War lost a massive event this year Cedar Creek, VA. For us who host Remagen in Tidioute, PA we have plenty of area to use and make a large event if the Gi's are wanting it. A place were armor and infanrty can fight. I did the GAP once and that was that. 3 seperate battles. We saw armor but could not be with them ect. Times change.

That's unfortunate, and I assume this year's mortar incident was the final straw. Hopefully this decision will be reversed by the next post commander, but in the meantime it should emphasize the necessity of getting some private land to conduct major tacticals on. The WWI group that has their own trench network has it right - you can't hardly be kicked off your own property, and if it is owned by the whole organization it helps with liability quite a bit. Perhaps at some point the WW2 living history/reenactment community can come together and purchase and build up a usable area for both tacticals and major living history events.

I have always thought that a WWII site could well be achieved under such conditions. And the best part is construction of our own MOUT type area- small trail structure with a "town" of several buildings, etc, which could be built for the use of the reenacting community... At different times, I even threw some sketches for such together, but nothing really useful.Sarchet wrote: ↑Thu Jul 12, 2018 11:43 pmThat's unfortunate, and I assume this year's mortar incident was the final straw. I doubt it was just one stupid mistake. Something like that is usually the last straw or the one thing someone was waiting for to happen to use as justification for shutting it down. Either way, it's rarely ever just one thing that results in something like this.
It's such a shame. I used to hit these events in the 90s and was lucky enough to be there for the 1995 one, which had several tanks in the field.

The flea markets there were epic and people came as far as Europe to attend just that.
But I always thought it was a matter of time before the PC-addled crowd would notice the Army was sponsoring events with German re-enactors. PC types would lose their minds at the idea of people dressed as WW2 Germans swarming around a base. Does anyone else recall the controversy about the 'Blood oath' ceremony that took place at FIG several years back? How about the year where a group showed up dressed at Hitler, Himmler, Goering and others? The public never found out about those things and if they'd had, I'm sure there's have bene protests at the gates afterward.
Yes, I would like to know the details as well as this is the first I've heard of any such incident.

The event organizer, WWIIHA, military officials and other involved parties have requested that there be no public discussion regarding the incident at the Gap. Please respect the request of the organizers the National Guard and other involved parties. If there is a “need” for info, contact WWIIHA. Thank you for your understanding and respect.

A participant at the Battle of the Bulge re-enactment at Fort Indiantown Gap was injured by a mortar during the event Friday.
The participant, whose name has not been released, sustained an injury while firing a blank round of ammunition from a World War II Historical Association modified 60 mm mortar tube, according to officials at Fort Indiantown Garrison Headquarters.
Officials said they were not at liberty to release the extent of the injury, but the injured participant was transported to Hershey Medical Center. Scanner reports on Friday indicated a person had lost a finger in the accident.
"As a result of the incident, and in accordance with regulations, the organization was placed in a safety stand down by Fort Indiantown Gap Range Control," a news release issued by Fort Indiantown Garrison Headquarters says. "The safety of all activities and everyone using Fort Indiantown Gap is our top priority." The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This is the extent of what I know on the mortar, I wasn't there so I can't comment on what happened in any more detail than the news got. Things happen and luckily it was only a finger lost rather than a limb or life.
Edit: Could not find a better article, so I copied the text for those on computers.

Very sad to hear that the event has been cancelled. I have attended it for the past 8 years just for the flea market and always came home with something to add to my collection. I hope something can be worked out so that this event can continue on somewhere else.
