Restauration ford gpw 1942 started juli 2018

Post by Rob82nd » Thu Jul 12, 2018 6:36 am

This year i bought my first jeep. A ford gpw from 1942.
I hope my english is good enough for everybody.

Every tip and idea to help the restauration is very welcome.

Last week we began to dismantle the jeep.

I first want to dismantle everything.
Than sandblast the frame and body.
I have to weld the floor plates
In the maen time I want to take care of the engine.

I hope to be finished before the end of may 2019. Than I can drive it to Normandy and in Holland with the 75th anniversary of d-day and Market Garden.

Here are some pictures.

I gave myself a one year deadline eight years ago. Good luck. Don’t rush just to get it done; you’ll regret it in the long run.

Great project. Looks like you have a good place to work on it as well. I’m trying to convince my wife to let me go to the 75th anniversary of D-day, let’s just say I’ve got my work cut out for me

As has been said take lots of pictures.

I’m going on 10 yrs on my project. Yikes. But I didn’t have a good goal like you.

Here some more pictures of the engine and the frame.

The frame is a GPW and the engine is a willys.
I already bought a nice GPW restored engine what i want to put in to this jeep.
So this one is for reserve or for sale.

I dont know exact what kind of tub i have.
The storage boxes in the back of the tub are GPW but the place were the button for the storage boxes is are round and not square.
Anybody an idea what it could be?

Today I have removed the fenders, the radiator, the manufold, the exhaust and i hoped the steering house.
But the steering house wouldn't come off.
I removed the bolts, took the steering wheel of but the house wouldn't came of. it looks like it is solid in the next arm part of the steering column.

Does annybody has an idea how to remove it?

I've found that the best way for me is with the steering wheel removed and the steering arm separated from the draglink is to pull it out through the floor. You may have to turn the steering shaft to position the steering arm in the most advantageous position and then turn the housing to get it to fit between the block and frame and springs and axle, but it will come out that way. In looking at your first picture it looks like you're trying to go above the frame. Try going lower, under the frame and axle. You may have to jack the front end up a bit.

Yesterday I had a lift to pull the engine out.

So we took that out, and took al the bolts and nuts from the body and chassee. Not al the bolts would came of so we took a grinder to take them of.
Now the body is loose from the chassee. So today we take the body from the chassee.

My suggestion: Get the jeep running for the 75th anniversary of D-day and Market Garden. Even if the jeep is not 100%. You do not need a 100 points factory restoration at this point. You can always do fixes and finishes later. You would not be in a good mood if you missed the deadline and had a 75 % jeep in pieces at home. Good luck.
