MVPA Judging Standards

Has there been any progress on the new judging standards? I know the old ones have some mistakes.

Yes, both the new Judging Standards and the new GPW Restoration Guide are coming along. I believe they’re both undergoing their finishing touches. Mike Wright has invested countless hours into this endeavor.

Where would one find them when completed? Have you heard of a completion time frame?

Hi everyone,
Both are going thru a final draft. At the convention I received many great bits of info from some very knowledgeable folks. The judging guide should be finished in approximately 2 months. It will be around 20 pages. The GPW Restoration guide has to have some higher resolution photos redone and some final editing and should be able to go to the MVPA in September or October for printing etc. So, I believe the end of this year or early next year it will be ready for purchase thru the MVPA.
The biggest issue is copyright issues.

After talking with Mike Wright at this years convention, work on an MB Restoration Guide/Standards has started. This will follow Mike’s GPW version. We have a group of the more knowledgeable MB guys to create it.

There is some good reference material out there but would always appreciate assistance on Willys documentation that will help with information such as change over dates, hardware finishes, etc. Really any Willys documentation. We want this as in-depth as possible.

While the GPW version is being used as a start, we are essentially starting from scratch since an MB version has never been done. There is no timeline for this so don’t expect it next week!

TJ....

Would it be possible to use the same format for the MB Judging Standards as Mike used for the GPW version? That would make it easier for all of us if there was only ONE format to become familiar with.

Chuck,

The GPW version is being used as a template. So the layout will be the same WRT the sections. However we may add more detail where we can or structure the sub-sections slightly different. We do plan on including information for the different factory jeeps produced such as the NOM-12 and MZ jeeps. So that will change things some.

What I meant by starting from scratch is we dont have a previous MB guide to start from. In the end it will be very similar to the GPW version with changes that make sense for the MB data.

Folks,
The GPW Restoration Standards will be going to the MVPA late October. Retiring, moving, parents and life take it's toll. I'm finalizing some pictures and getting them in the order and format that the MVPA editor wants.
Thanks for the patience, I believe it is a quality product that will answer a lot of questions.
And Thanks to TZ for picking up the mantle for a MB Standards!

Mike has spent countless hours over the last few years to basically rewrite the GPW Judging Standards with more and updated new information and to add a lot of photos. To do that, it takes a group of guys who review the latest re-writes between them to reach a consensus on things. It will be the same with the MB version. I believe you will find documentation in Lloyd's MB book to give you a good start on it.

One heads up we discovered late into the process was that low res photos won't print well so you should only accept them at 1MB or higher resolution or you will be scrambling when you get close to finishing.

The MBJS may have the benefit of more available factory drawings or blueprints and documents which will move the process along faster, but as we discovered, you can't rely on one source or document....things in 1942 were not the same a year or two later so the timeline for each item in your book is important as well.

I would suggest you wait for the GPWJS and send a copy to each of your research team members and ask them to start with the MB version of each part to start with. Then you can assemble a working copy for the rest of the process. You will need a team of perhaps eight guys or more who can contribute but there will always be some guys who know quite a bit about one topic and less about others so the team effort is needed to get 'er done. Mike took on a thankless task here to do this as the lead guy on the project and relied on the team to vet anything the individuals posted and for everyone to take as many hi res pics as possible.

Good Luck!

Chuck,

Thanks for reply! I’ve been in contact with Mike and the picture issue was one of the first things he brought up. So we will be addressing that right from the beginning. Mike has been very helpful with advice thus far.

Lloyd’s books will be helpful but only to a certain point. As it clearly states in them they are not a restoration guide. So many of the fine details aren’t there. Yes a lot of factory documentation exists but I don’t have access to them. We will certainly need help on that end. As you said things changed a lot. So documentation is going to be key on nailing down changes and many other details we want to add. I’ve only started working on it for a few weeks and have already come across more questions then answers. For example certain bond straps may not have been used on Suppression II jeeps as every thinks. I’ve got pretty strong evidence to prove this but more evidence is always better.

This is definitely going to be a team effort for sure. I have a couple gentlemen signed up to help. Not only for their knowledge but to help create the document. I write test plans for the Navy so I am very familiar with a review process. Luckily the group of gentleman that plan on helping right now are very knowledgeable and very detailed when documenting MBs. I of course will take any useful help that I can. As we move along and dig deeper into this more and more questions will arise that I hope we can answer

Hello gents,
Has there been any updated timeline on the GPW judging standards information?

Thanks!
