I found the source of the mushy brake pedal. I have a leak in the front cup of the right front wheel brake cylinder. I removed the wheel, drum and brake cylinder.

The rear cup is dry and when you pull it out there is a nice suction between the cup and rubber follower, but the front cup has measurable slop between the sides of the metal cup and rubber follower. I am suspecting I need a new cylinder. :o If anyone knows if there is a different solution please let me know. I think I just got one made on Monday by a lack luster employee  For $39 I think it would be best to just order a new one. Thoughts?

VPW is a great company. I called them to order a new cylinder and they just said they would send me a new one no charge. Happy to do business with them :)

Connected the speedometer and it works superbly. No bouncing at all. Very happy with my rebuild and a new cable to boot.

I installed the new RF wheel cylinder and have no leaks. I just need to bleed everything again as the brakes are still mushy. I probably have air everywhere from this leak. Oh well, ya learn ya know.

Took her out for a short drive just to verify the gauges. Only got about a half of a mile down the road when...yes, the gas gauge is accurate  It was a nice walk back to the workshop to retrieve the fuel can. Back up again after flooding her. I am still learning the sweet spot for starting cold and hot. I pumped the pedal too many times and had to wait a few minutes to let things clear. For now, cold start is 1/8 choke and throttle, one pump and quick start. Warm is about the same, perhaps not needing any choke and no pumps.

Oil pressure held around 40 psi during slow driving, dropped to about 15 when I shifted to 2nd and bogged her down a bit and almost stalled the engine. Still learning her peculiarities. The temporary child's chair I have installed leaves me no room for my knees and legs to shift, start and move the pedals prperly. I'm 6' 1/2", so I think I will get cracking on the seats when I return from TN next week.

I just ordered the VPW vinyl seat back and bottom in brown. They should be here when I return from TN and I;ll report with some images and am open to comments on getting seats done. I spoke with VPW and they recommended using a car upholstery place that has experience making seats as they will cut the HDF and make sure no wrinkles are in the seats.

My plan:

1. Cut a 3/4" plywood form for the bottom (1/2" for back) using both the vinyl and the seat support pan as a guide.
2. Copy some images of the original WC12 seat profile and pattern as shown from another member below.
3. Work with a local upholster to get the seats done
4. Make the metal connecting hardware to hang the back and connect the back to the bottom similar to how the spring seat and back are connected.

Advice?

Completion of the SINGLE most important component installed to date.

Now I can no longer use the bumper sticker "Horn broken, watch out for finger!"

Well done OZ really beautiful truck. I already thump up on your videos. Also I am curious about your oil gauge is low , on a warm temp. When you drive like 10 or 20 miles and you stop it will drop next to zero on 160 - 180 F, I had this before, when I put new spring in oil valve relieve,

And do you mean the stickers say, caution horn broken watch you finger, :D I have that stickers on my jeep and I on my restore dodge. And my other dodge I am restoring has a sticker, honk if parts falls off. And the other dodge has a signs on the back says, you are passing a piss of s### dodge, sorry of any parts that fall off, thank you for your patience😕,. I got that for my birthday from the dodge club members, so many people at the show is taking photos of it and want one.

The front right wheel always the one leaks, I seen few dodge members at the 1 week military show were fixing the front right wheel, I had to fix mine as well as I was buying MacDonald for lunch for myself and my dodge friends, and head back to camp I lost brakes on the road so I had to use hand brake luckily I had that hand brake fix before, so made it back I I check the box in back of the dodge, lucky I have put the spare rebuilt wheel cyclinder, change it and worked fine. I am so confused why other dodge members have leaks only front right wheel.

I really enjoyed your thread OZ
Cheers

I think my oil just dropped because I almost stalled the truck when shifting into a higher gear at slow speed. Real low rpm, probable a few hundred and the press dropped just for a few seconds. It seems to stay around 30 - 38 most of the time. I'll keep an eye on it and if more problems I'll,change out the spring.

I love bumper stickers. Saw a great one in Mississippi with a rebel flag: "Welcome to the South, now go home!"

The RF is smaller than most RR being 11" vice 14" perhaps there s a flaw in how they make that particular cylinder or parts in it.

Thanks for the comments.

Looks like you're getting close to getting this thing wrapped up OZ. Well, I guess they never really are wrapped up...eh? I have a new set of brake cylinders as well. I'll have to eyeball the right front and see if it suffers the same malady.

I purchased my cylinders from VPW. I wonder if they have a few of these go bad in the past. Anecdotally, it seems like a potential trend. Look forward to hearing your fate. In any case VPW did not even question the replacement, just sent a new one immediately. From where did yours come?

Not much left to do, will probably get caught between the move to TN and not finish her for a while. Perhaps while I am building I can get some of the small things done.

I received mine from Midwest Military. Neglected to check on the right front cylinder today. Must have been delirious from the heat.

Oz,
Due to laziness, I got several pages behind on your great restoration.
Thanks for taking the time to document, and post all the pictures, and details.

I hate to be a spoilsport, but one trivial thing that I noticed, is that the driver side front cab bolt is the one that should not have a spring.
This will not matter unless you are going to do some serious off-roading.
Under severe twisting, you don't want the driver side floor to raise away from the frame, as the use of the clutch and brake pedals can be impeded.

I am glad to see you nearing the days when you are just driving and maintaining your Dodge.
All the great people you will meet (and often educate) will make all of your hard work even more satisfying.
