Hi Marty/all

Thanks for the detailed info on installing the OD. I have wanted one for a while and with the higher aussie dollar I will now purchase one- even happier that i can install it without cutting up the body!

Can i just clarify two things though.

1. When you and John (artificer) say rear shift, what is the type you installed? I assume by name, the one you got is a front shift?
I was intending on ordering this one from Herm: #5675 - 27 Tooth x 6 Spline Front Shift (MB/GPW WW2 Jeep Only & Hotchkiss M201). Is it the same one as you fitted to your jeep where you modified the shift pin and floor plate as outlined on the previous page? (basically, i dont want to drill a hole near the fuel tank like John has shown above), i want to do it like you did!

2. It looks that you dont need any to secure the 3rd/OD shifter onto the pin because it buts up to the ear of the TC and the edge of the trans and cant slip off? Simple question, but i wasnt sure!

Thanks again,
Ian.

Ian,

1) There are two different styles of shifter, the front shifter is the type I used. Rear shift is the one Artificer used. Rear shifts were needed in later Jeeps because of the different larger transmissions used with them.

2) The OD shift lever floats on the pin, it can't come loose unless the pin comes out. It's trapped between the shifter arm and the transmission case. Some late transmission cases have a thicker rib along the left side of the case, the lever may need to be ground a bit to clear the case if it's rubbing there.

Note that my tub has been previously modified with a hole for the shifter pin to be installed with the t-case in the jeep. Not sure if it could be installed without the tub hole since it's longer than the stock pin. Not having the hole could make it hard to replace the pin into the transfer case without dropping it down or lifting the tub.

Also, Make sure that you need the 27 tooth gear before you order it, I would pull the cover and count the teeth to be sure! There are some 26 teeth gear sets from very early CJ-2A's that use the 3/4" shaft like the G503.

Hi Marty,

Thanks very much for that- all clear now! I shall certainly pull the rear plate- cheap insurance to make sure i get the right one!

Cheers,
Ian.

Most ex OZ Army jeeps have a hole in the floor to grease &/or remove the T/F case shifter pin.

I am anxious to see Artificer's photos of his installation. How can I do this? Thanks. David

Here are the pictures of the rear operated overdrive on my Jeep. The overdrive was purchased from Advance Adaptors CA.
One's hand drops right on the change lever fabricated from a transfer case shift lever that is mounted alongside the drivers seat.
Worked great & did not look out of place.

John,

That is a very clean and sanitary installation. I like that better than going to the transfer case pivot pin and fabricating from there back. I concur with Advance Adapters rather Herm as a source for the overdrive. The 45 CJ2A I bought a number of years ago which still has the three on the tree was owned by an off road axle builder by the name of Sandy Cone. Sandy recommended Advance Adapters as he knew the owner personally as having had business dealing with him.

When I finally get of my rear, I am going to install the overdrive in the 45 2A and buy it from Advance Adapters being brand new instead of rebuilt used.

Thanks again for posting the photos,

Frank

The triple shift lever won't work with a CJ-2A T-90 so Artificer's route is the one to take.

Herm sells new AA overdrives, too.

Marty,

Thanks for the info. I was not aware to that issue with the T90vsT84 shift lever locations.

I am still leaning towards buying it from Advance when the times comes for the install in the 45 2A.

Have a great week,

Marty,

Here is a link to the Advance Adapter's web site

http://www.advanceadapters.com/categori ... r_filter=1

The OD is listed at $801.51
The shift lever kit $82.52

What small parts would your recommend to have on hand ?

Thx

Frank

ps: just went on the Summit Web site and looked up the overdrive, it is listed at $1,147.99.

Now I don't know which is the correct price for the od.

Gear oil type RTV sealant and gear oil! The OD kit should have all the parts you need. Summit has no tax in most states and free shipping, so figure that into the price. Herm's rebuilt units have all the wear parts replaced, biggest cause of failure is a low oil level in the t-case which eats the planetaries, so check it often if yours seeps.

The CJ-2 should be a 26 tooth drive gear with a 10 spline shaft, but pull the cover and gear nut to count the teeth and splines to be sure.

Frank - I recommend you get a few extra of the special square-shaped clips that help lock the bowl gear nut.

They offer a 27 tooth, 6 spline unit. But it says "Mitsubishi jeep" when you choose that application. That can't be right for a WWII jeep, can it?

Besides, it was $1095.29 in that configuration.
