Ben Hur spotted in Djibouti

Post by Rustman » Thu Jun 21, 2018 2:03 am

Spotted this not far from Camp Lemonnier. I suspect it's a Ben Hur. Though on the G503 Facebook group a member suggested it's a French 1-ton trailer. Which makes sense since this was a French territory up until 1977 and the French still have a base here.

I'm only here another day. But if someone has the resources and wherewithal to get this I'll give you a pretty precise map location. It's between the port and the base.

Lotsa scrap from W.W. 2 in Djibouti in yards around the area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMdlpAjdXAE. Funky music, but lotsa eye candy laying about. :)

Wow! That's quite the video there of all kinds of goodness. Djibouti is a major port city. Wonder if anyone is able to make the efforts to move and save some of that stuff.

my guess is that most of those jeeps are Hotchie's, not MB/GPW.

Lots of US stuff in a couple of yards there but it's all tied up by the local government and scrap yard owner. Shipped my halftrack home from there in 2007 so yes it possible to get those items back to the States if you can deal with the customs aspects.

Helps to know the locals or to develop a trusted contact otherwise you'll be paying "Muzunga" prices. I was stationed there for 18 months and developed a great relationship with the FFL and others. Just plain lucked out!

Mark,

Thanks for that info. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was only there for a couple of days. No time to build those relationships and figure out shipping.
