That's really a fine job! Congratulations.

If your metalization is not galvanization why not.
It's very difficult to apply painting on galvanized surfaces.
You need a special primary coating otherwise the painting will never adhere.

I've coated my tub with Tanik which is likely what Patrick explained.
My tub was completely black. The tub was still brown at certain places, so I've coated these locations a second time until the tub was black.
The advantages are that it's very easy to use and you can paint directly on Tanik coated surfaces. No need to wash the surfaces afterwards.
Tanik is like a very low viscosity "milk"

Hello

The metalization I talk about is metal spraying.
One ends up with a coating of Zinc Aluminium.

Perfect rust protection and no problem with painting according to the company that does it.
In dutch the name for the process is ‘Schooperen’
I did find a video but it is also in Dutch. You can see the process though.

I will try to find out more and report on it.
There are videos in English also when one looks for metal spraying.

I have been doing a little research on this as well. I think you have two different issues. One is how you are going to clean up the welds and the second is metal preparation for paint.
Hello Patrick

Thanks for the tip on the body filler. I will check on that.
For the rust protection I did have something else in mind as you can see in my previous post.

I will investigate and report

Thanks

Sorry, it was a joke, referring to the Frenchman's comment of "fantastique". I said I didn't put the "que" on the end. It just ends with a C; not as elegant or fancy in English as in French.
Nice work.

Hello,

It has been a while since I reported. It has been a while also since I did something to the tub. It is primer painted now. I will show what it looks like later.

The tub is one thing to repair but there are also fenders that need attention.
I did think this would be a couple of hours work (as usual) so I just started working on them without really documenting.

20 (TWENTY!) hours later I am almost where they can get their primer paint.

I took a couple of pictures but I did not go into much detail. It was not as easy as I thought. I hope the pictures speak for themselves and show the kind of issues one can have with the fenders.

As one can see on one of the previous picture I first decided to replace only part of the reinforcement bracket.

Later, because the fender was really beaten up and also because there was another section that was badly rusted, I decided to remove the whole reinforcement bracket and replace it completely by a repro from Joe's Motor Pool.

The following pictures show the restored fenders. I still need to sand bondo on one of both. The bondo is used to hide the not so perfect welds :-(

Tomorrow I will sand the bondo and get the fenders primed.

Pfoe! 20 hours of work for just the fenders :-(

To be continued.

Wow, doesn’t THAT look familiar! I’m just about in the same spot with the MB I’m working on. I have the same repairs as well but I was able to grind and shrink it a little better and get away with spot putty instead of bondo; but then I think I exceeded your 20 hour timeframe by a factor of several. The time factor is both frustrating and therapeutic all at the same time!
