Selling an October 1953 M38A1 in fair (excellent restorable) condition. The 2nd Generation M38A1s started at Serial Number 62000 and this is 62222 with all 1st Generation components (thumb-screw battery cover, free-standing radiator, hinged grille), making this one of the, if not the, last 1st generations produced.

It is not currently running, but was when it was parked...the previous owner passed away. The engine turns over and needs very little work to get it running again. Original 24-volts, comes with new batteries, new battery cables, new gaskets, hoses, and glass for the passenger's side. Original data plates included, hood numbers visible under paint and unit markings on the bumper. Selling only because I bought it without speaking with my wife first...this is a great jeep for somebody (tell your wife first!!).

Me and the M38A1 are located just north of Atlanta.

Thanks, Ben. I have seen that stated before, but this jeep was from that same month (10/1953) and has the Generation 1 hallmarks of the hinged radiator guard, free-standing radiator and thumb screw battery cover. It does, however, have the cover plate over the seam of the fender. Might be that during the model change-over they had parts that they were getting rid of from the existing inventory?

The hinged Radiator Guard coinsides with the early fenders. The early fenders with exposed seals are anchored to the chassis rails by the fender braces. Fenders with the cover plates are not anchored to the chassis rails, M-38A1 Jeeps with the late fenders had the two rods from the cowl to the non hinged grill.

these fenders are affixed to the radiator guard and to the firewall/tub but not to the chassis. My email is jme37@cornell.edu if you have the time and interest in talking in more depth about it.

Thanks,
John

The hinged Radiator Guard coinsides with the early fenders. The early fenders with exposed seams are anchored to the chassis rails by the fender braces. This set up held the radiator Guard in place The braces on fenders with the cover plates were shorter and were not attached to the chassis rails. MD's after 60406 had Right and Left Tie Rods that attached to the cowl and were attached to the grill to hold the grill in place. This can be confirmed by consulting the SNL's for the Willys Model MD (M-38A1)
The Brackets at the cowl for the Tie Rods 684917 and 684 918 appeared on body tubs after Chassis 60406., there was no reason for those brackets on M-38A1 Jeeps made with hinged radiator guards 60406 and earlier.

That indicates to me, although not certain, that the fenders have been replaced since all of the other features of the body and the engine coincide with the first generation M38A1.

Frame 805715 was used thru 60406. Frame 809121was used after 60406 and had a bracket on the front cross member to support the non hinged grill.
Does your front cross member have that bracket? There are other subtle differences in body sheet metal, to confirm the era of a body tub, but it will not be necessary.

Thanks. I just went out to double check and, if you mean a bracket that would have supported the grill in the middle, it does not.

The frame in your M-38A1 is for Serial No. 60406 and earlier, your fenders are for a later M-38A1. Did you check for the brackets on the cowl that the radiator tie rods attach to?
As far as serial numbers and dates, your JEEP or the one you are comparing it to may have sat at the factory for some reason.
from what has been discussed, it is apparent that the Serial No. 62222 does not match the early features of your Jeep.
Does your body have the retaining spring (flat spring bolted to body side)for your passenger seat?

Yes, I checked for those brackets on the cowl as well and they are not there. Thanks for your insight. Yes, must have sat or they must have been trying to get rid of some earlier parts as they transitioned. I love the history of these things...must be the manufacturing nerd in me.

There’s no passenger seat retaining spring.

Those brackets for the radiator tie rods are exactly under the hood hinges, I can see that they were never installed. Is the retaining spring for your passenger seat installed. That will indicate a clue as to the original serial number. So far it appears to be 60406 or earlier and the features match the numbers in the SNL's and Jeep Factory Parts List As far as using left over parts, it is doubtful as they would not be functional as the early fenders are used to brace the radiator.
