Hey Kirk,

Perhaps this version looks a little more like the Ardennes region in January 1945.

It does give you a firm appreciation for how hard the conditions were. I can't imagine spending weeks sleeping out in that type of weather, let alone being shelled and shot at.

Hello, I was searching for steering box seals on the internet and ran across you pictures of your steering box.

Do you recall where you got that cork seal for the sector shaft on the steering box? (on page 13)

Paul;

Your using 120 wt. oil???
Coastal oil Products in Pa., sell a 90 wt GL4 soft metal compatible gear oil, I use there product in my trucks and Redline MT-90 in the transfer case, Redline would get pricey in the tranny thou, as the big trucks take 3 gallons.

Great picture/

It has been quite a while since I have posted on this build thread. My old 1941 tipper "Audra" just gets driven for the most part, she is a pretty reliable and durable machine. Not much work has been warranted or required other than routine maintenance. However, the hydraulic ram seals have been leaking so recently I decided to delve into replacing the packing on the ram and control valve. The process was relatively straight forward and reminded me of replacing the faucet packing on old house plumbing than anything else. The pump runs so smooth it is hard to hear it is engaged, pretty cool for 76 year old iron.

Thanks Tony and Kirk. Hope you both are doing well, and I hope you are enjoying your project trucks.

This morning is cool with a fantastic Carolina blue sky...think I will take a ride on one of my favorite circuits, over the river and through the woods.

Hey all,

Winters grip has relaxed in the last few weeks, and a couple of good rains have washed the Chevy eating salt off of the roadways. Took Audra on a gruelling steep/curvy run with many switchbacks. She was up to the task but I had to go down to 2nd gear and keep the engine revving high enough to continue pulling the top third of the grade. Can you all imagine when these trucks were used as primary carriers and the they were traversing steep slopes fully loaded?! Gears will get you anywhere but necassarily fast, which is fine as I enjoy hearing the gears anyway.

Image
At the top of the gap, stopping to check brake temperature before making the descent.

Over the winter, I made a anti-freeze expansion tank to catch the occasional "puke" markings the truck makes when driven hard or in hot weather. There is a true GM produced expansion tank for these trucks, but it is quite rare and expensive when they do appear. Instead, I decided to make a collection device that could have been made from local items by an idle mechanic/fabricator back in the WW2 wartime period somewhere on the Alcan Highway or in Europe.

Image
Process began with sourcing an appropriate era bottle. This 1939 12 ounce beer bottle was a good fit. The metal bracket was constructed with common 1/8 inch wire coiled around a spray paint can and then welded. The tabs were random flat stock items that could have been found in any shop.

Image
Bracket was installed using existing holes or fastener mounting points. No alterations were made to the truck. A little felt glued to the bracket rim eliminates abrasion/rattling.

Image
Here is my invention after the long drive. It looks like about half of the bottle is filled so hopefully it can catch the total expansion volume range.

Yeah I know I am writing about an alteration to an otherwise quite original truck, but this one is perfectly harmless as nothing on the truck is altered and it solves a "drippage" issue of expanded anti-freeze. So far I have noticed that non-automotive type people often focus on the bottle and start asking questions as I suppose it looks out of place. The attention is good as it opens the door to talk about history to someone that may not have great interest...yet. Anyway, I had some fun and my "bubbafication" seems to be solving those sometimes embarrassing moments when your truck marks its spot.

Hope you all are enjoying the hobby and are getting out soon.

Cleaver repair to a nice problem to have. I never thought to keep my open beer under the hood.

Hi Paul, I like your field mod. it looks really good. I made a surge tank for my first Chevy using a one gallon lawn edger fuel tank. I plumbed the overflow hose to a petcock at the bottom of the tank and kept it half full of coolant. As the temp. in the engine rose, the coolant would expand and flow into the tank. When it cooled and contracted, the coolant would be drawn back into the radiator. Before the overflow tank, coolant loss. After installation, ZERO coolant loss.
I still like looking at the photo of your truck coming up the road in snowfall. It's just great!! :)

"Honest officer, I wasnt drinking and driving". Its kind of hot in the engine compartment, I guess my "cup holder" would only be good for porters or ales...hot lagers would taste rather skunky.

Thanks to those that replied, the hobby is more fun with some interaction versus the hundreds of silent unidentified lurkers.

Hope you all have some time to play with your trucks.

Took Audra out for a nice 50 mile spring drive yesterday. Other than some guy at the gas station saying "nice Dodge", everything was good. Looked at my log book and realized that I have already racked up nearly 3,000 miles, time flies when your having fun.
