Great idea! (May I suggest changing the name to Cabinet Variants though? Chests will include lots of boxes...) Now where are your two (2) cabinets?!! And I want dimensions... :)

Wartime 41-C-15: 25" W x 25" D x 31" H (not including the butcher block worktop).

1962 Type V: 25" W x 25" D x 34" H (not including the butcher bock worktop, which is 2" thick").

Awesome cabinets, Tin! I like the greater variety of that drawer configuration. Note the 13-digit NSN on yours vs the 11-digit FSN on mine. Take measurements when you can. I'm curious.

Greg, my box isn't as deep. 25" W x 17-1/2" D x 33-3/4" H plus 2" butcher block.

Looking at my tag I believe the date to be 76.

Here's my 41-C-15 rescued from Jack Martin's MV junkyard in Tucson 10-15 years ago.

Image

Not bad for outside storage? A few other chests on top. The small arms one is a repaint and missing the front cover/tray but for $1 at a swap meet it was definately coming home. The NAF 1156-1 is a very handy piece as well.

And no, it NEVER looks this tidy... It took five minutes to remove the cr@p piled on top for this pic. :D

It's almost like a garage stack now, Jeff. With the cabinet as the main box and the armorer's chest and the other one like a top box, and yet some workbench space. I'm totally stealing that idea. I need to clean my basement first though, which is the ultimate destination.

Steve - Did you notice how ours have the same construction? And the pulls and the identification card holders on each drawer are the same as well.

Aside from the depth they appear to be identical in construction.

I take it the castors on Greg's unit aren't original ? they look too weedy to take the weight of that thing when loaded with tools.

Would these not have been standard fit in some of the workshop trucks, or were the workshop truck units all just built-in ?

Hi Gordon,
I noted in my original post (on my 'Spring Has Sprung Tools' thread) that I didn't think the casters were original. Since then I've been doing some research. If you google the more modern 13-digit NSN version (7125-00-330-0130) of the earlier 11-digit FSN (7125-330-0130) on my cabinet, you will find a bunch of different 70's era Tech Bulletins on-line with installation instructions, which all called for measuring and drilling holes in the base and the floor of the truck or mobile shelter, as the case may be, and securing it with 3/8" x 1-1/8" cap screws. Funny thing is, it was always in the rear and on the left hand side of the truck, just as we see them positioned on the back of the CCKW during WWII!

By the way, the provisions for the security bar on these cabinets may have also kept the tools from being pilfered, but as I noted in my original post, they were primarily essential for keeping the drawers from flying open in transit.

Thanks for that. Rear left for some reason? I'd have put it up against the bed headboard where you could have drilled through and secured it three ways, but I suppose rear is most accessible when you are standing outside the truck.

I don't think I've ever see one this side of the pond, but I'll recognise it now it I do.

Speaking of the base, I'm assuming the other units have a recessed base, like mine, with corner pieces. But it would be good for Phil/Jeff and Steve to confirm that.

One other comparison note: not sure what nitwit decided to fit the butcher block worktop to the O.D. of the Type V cabinet, except the front, which is the only place I have an overhang, but I hope he was fired. Phil and Jeff have all kinds of places to clamp equipment on their cabinet, since the worktop overhangs on the sides. I only have the front - you know, where the top drawer pulls open!

It's a really good job you are not the unscrupulous type who would take out the drawers, reach inside, unscrew the top, turn it 90 degrees, and screw it back on so it was usefully overlapping one side, then ....

This wood and metal variant would probably have come from a workshop truck then? Construction is different, but solid butchers block top is there, complete with three holes for the vise and four where the grinder would normally have been.
